iTunes problem when launching and sync-ing with Apple TV

The following occurred when I launched iTunes

1. iTunes tells me my computer isn't authorized.

and when I went thru the process of authorizing it I get

2. iTunes tells me

There was an error storing your authorization
information on this computer.

The required directory was not found or has a permission error.
Correct this permissions problem and try again, or deauthorize this
computer if the permissions cannot be changed.

I have a real problem with this message

a) The message says to correct the directory's permissions but fails to define the pathname to it - so what can I do to resolve this ?
b) I tried un-authorizing the computer and was presented with the same error message!

This is a real BIG problem as without authorization I cannot sync many of my Apple Store purchased movies to my Apple TV. In fact, those that were on my Apple TV have now been removed. Very annoying problem for me.

If anyone can direct me to the full pathname of my missing iTune directory I would be very much obliged. THANKS... 🙂

OK - here's what I did to recover from this very obnoxious situation...

I've had a **** of a time with iTunes not allowing me to play any purchased music and movies etc. It was reporting permission errors on directories and files and saying my computer wasn't authorized to play things which I had purchased. I tried un-authorizing and authorizing but to no avail. This was very upsetting to say the least. I must have done something really stupid somewhere in past day or two. I've been on the phone with Apple Care twice now for about 2 hrs each time and have had no luck.

I took the initiative and performed an Install&Archive on my 10.5.4 GM system using the AppleSeed's 10.5.4 DVD they sent recently and have spent hours getting every aspect up to speed and in pristine condition. I did this as I could not figure out what the permission error was nor where to go to fix it. I assumed the A&I would get my permissions straightened out.

I have to say the above Archive&Install has fixed my permissions problem and now I can play all my purchased stuff. Now I have to reload/sync my Apple TV, iPod and iPhone as the above problem zapped everything on them, and I mean everything.

My last point, and one that others should pay some attention to, is that Time Machine saved me as I went back to last Friday's snapshot and reloaded things from there as all was well at that time. Also, the A&I appears to be the solution for fixing the permission error that Apple really should be clearer about by say what files or directories were missing and/or had permission errors and what the CORRECTIVE action by the user should be.

BTW - I initially thought I could use (and I did) the Installer DU to fix permissions that DU could not when executing on a running system. Using the Installer disk to boot up from meant presumably that DU could actually fix ALL permissions. Apparently not so in this case.

Problem has been solved.
