"This device can perform faster...." - but can it really?

Ok, seems like my iPhone 3G does not really support USB 2.0. Every time I plug it in I get the "This device can perform faster..." message indicating that it is running in USB 1.1 mode - even though the port is USB2.0 and if I plug in a USB2.0 external drive into the same port it works like a charm (at full 2.0 speed).

Give how unstable iPhone's been and how often it requires a full reload, USB1.1 speed is just too painful.

Anyone else run into this? Any suggestions on how to make it run at full speed?

Thanks.

It does not kill the port or the hub. You will find that the OS has disabled those ports as they have issued an over/under voltage notice. This usually hapens with an unpowered hub. I have my iPhone plugged into a Belkin 8 port USB hub on my Mac, which also my eyeTV tuner, Turbo H624 encoder, multi card reader and a memory stick all plugged in and working at the same time. I had a cheap hub on their before and the power supply failed without showing the fault and the hub drew power from the Mac instead. The iPhone would not sync but other devices worked which took ages to problem solve!!

I suspect the reason apple say plug it in direct is they have seen the same problem and it is easier to just cut the problem out the loop.

On a mac if the ports are switched off on a hub you can reinitialise them by doing a hardware reset but not sure how you do it on a PC.

Ok, there are no hubs involved - (at least not external), and as I said, plugging in an external USB2.0 drive into same port works - so it is not the port.

I found the iPhone device driver in device manager and told it to try to update the driver - it did, reported driver version went from 1.29 to 6.0.9999.29 (still shows up as 1,29 under file details) - now when I plug in iPhone into that same port, I get 2.0 speeds, but iTunes does not see the iPhone - I get "could not connect to the iPhone ~ because an invalid response...". If I plug in iPhone into any other port, I still get 1.1 speeds and it works (though painfully slow).

I am guessing the driver is bad, any idea on how to get the right iPhone driver for XP? (And don't say upgrade to 7.7.1 - I've had enough of my iPhone trashed for one week)

Thanks,

Hitchhiker,

It sounds like you may have a mix of pieces of previous versions of iTunes and iPod/iPhone drivers.

One thing that can cause this is antivirus software protecting from being changed processes running in the background used by the iPhone, iPod or iTunes when you install an update to iTunes.

I would recommend following the steps in this article to completely remove the previous versions, then reboot your Windows-based PC, and install iTunes 7.7.1. When you download it save the file, don't run it from the website.

Thank you,

Yes you need 7.7.1 iTunes. I'm sorry to be the one to have to tell you this, but you DO!

Yeah, I need it like I need an extra hole in my head. Google it. 7.7.1 is known to corrupt DRM data on the iPhone so that you loose most of your apps and all your iPod functionality. (here's one thread on it here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7902106#7902106 ) Having gone through that not once but twice, I say no thank you. It may be dog slow, but at least my iPhone is somewhat functional under 7.7.0. I guess i'll wait for new and exciting ways my iPhone will be trashed by 7.7.2. I miss my Treo - it wasn't as pretty, but it just worked.

And BTW, all of these problems predate release of 7.7.1, so I am pretty sure this is not the issue.

The issue you describe did not occur to me. Not a single bit of any DRM-tainted file of mine has been corrupted, and I had not s single hiccup in my daily 5 hours of ipod use.

Whatever the issue is, it is not a guaranteed problem with the most recent itunes 7.7.1.11

I am happy it works for you, it worked for me too for a while... then after one sync suddenly my iPod was empty of all content and most of the apps would not run (yet some did - go figure). The funny thing is that most of the content on my iPod was DRM free MP3's - did not matter, they were all inaccessible).

All in all, even if you are, I am not willing to play Russian roulette wondering with each sync if I will be forced to waste hours deleting and restoring my iPhone (and with USB2 broken, it takes hours and hours) and then re-set up all my email, etc - because those settings apparently are not important enough to be saved by a backup - and then deal with loosing app data. Even if majority of the people do not have this issue, enough people did, including myself.

And by the way, when I was running 7.7.1, the USB problem was there just the same - so the only "solution" to it seems to be to sit and wait for apple to fix it.

It is not just DRMed files, anything iPod app would play is broken when DRM corrupts. Most of mine were plain old MP3's and none of them would show up under iPod.

No, it's not so much a guarantee, it is more of a "lottery" kind of a thing. And DRM corruption may happen during any sync, not just when you first upgrade - which makes it all that much more fun. In my case during one sync I got a strange error about being unable to sync my apps. I did not think much of it at the time, figured I'll sync it the next time, but next time I tried to, I suddenly could not play any music nor open most apps.

Done that to the letter (installed 7.7.0 though) - same difference - still not USB 2.0.

You should stop torturing yourself. Your iPhone isn't the only place your data is stored. It's also on your PC unless your specifically NOT syncing it. Your apps area also stored on your PC, as is your music. Your e-mail settings can be synced as well. Look in the device settings when it's connected. You will have an option to sync e-mail account settings. Connect your iPhone and from the file menu select "Transfer purchases from iPod" to make sure your PC has everything it should. You should also do a full backup before any upgrade.

If you happen to have a DRM issue, just re-authorize your computer. If your running windows vista and you have this issue, make sure you launch iTunes with Administrator access and re-authorize. I've had permissions issues with Vista that were resolved that way.

You really should upgrade to the latest version of itunes and stop manually trying various unsupported driver/iTunes configurations. Your probably creating your own headache.

There are millions of iPhones out there. How many folks in your thread had a problem? Now figure out the odds of it happening to you. 😉
