ITunes prompted me to install latest update. Install failed and IPhone locked. Got message that indicated IPhone was in recovery mode and needed to be restored. Have attempted restore several times, which always fails with a message that says, "Restore failed due to unknown error." Any suggestions as to how to proceed? Thanks.

    I got same result>
Tried 2.0.2 upgrade. "Unknown error occurred" - Only white Apple shows on iPhone...
Now get "iPhone in recovery mode" when re-starting iTunes, then when I start recovery I get error message: " The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (2005)"
Re-tried several times with same result...
Hope we're not left with no iPhone use for too long!! Good Luck!

Make sure your using the cable that came with the iPhone. Also, make sure its directly connected to a high speed USB 2 port. http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1286

Thanks, Jason. A reboot of the PC brought it back into shape, and checking the cable was next on my list. Thanks very much. The article in the link was a good one.

OK, for the second time I am being stuck in this infinite "Restore"/"Error" loop. The first time was when I updated 2.0.1 and now it happened when I updated 2.0.2, what the ****?? Aren't these updated supposed to HELP my iPhone? I never once had a problem with my old iPhone, but the 3G has crashed every time I update. Can someone please shed some light on this? Is this a warranty issue? Very frustrating...

exact same thing happened to me when updating to the 2.02 software, error code 2005. i realized that i was using the cable from my originial iphone. it works to charge the 3G iphone and sync, but apparently not to update software. and they are almost impossible to tell apart.

switched to the 3G cable and all was updated and restored. you would think they would either make the cables compatible or clearly identify them as different.
