Getting online with Verizon Broadband USB Modem (EVDO)

jdamiano-

Thanks for confirming what I suspected -- that I can use a USB Broadband Modem with my Mac withOUT VZAccess Manager.

Alas, I'm having some problems and I'd love it if someone can help me.

*
o I Verizon's UM175 -- a relatively new replacement for the UM150.

*
o I have a MacBook Air. While I have a CD player on my PC in the next room, I'd rather not clutter up my Mac with VZAccess AND I understand it's faster ot use Leopard's built-in capabilities.

That said, I can't get it to work.

1. I plugged in the USB modem.

2. I Went to system preferences > network

3. I saw the new modem listed on the left -- it's listed as "Pantech Modem"

4. I highlighted it.

5. It wants a phone number, an email address, and a password. I enter my phone number as it was given to me at the store (and has been confirmed by a call to Verizon), my email address (which is allegedly my phone #@vzw3g.com, and my password (which, after calling in, was told was "vzw")

6. When I hit "connect" I get the following error:

Internet Connect
A modem error occurred. Please check your settings.

So... what am I doing wrong? If it were something as simple as an incorrect password I assume it would tell me.

UPDATE: A call to Verizon tells me I need to "activate" my broadband modem. But they don't know any way to activate it without installing VZAccess Manager. Does anyone else know how to do this?

Petestein1,

Unless Verizon has changed things since I used a connection card (not likely), you don't need a username and password; just the mobile data access #.

However, any connection device must be "registered" with the network. Typically, this job is handled by whoever sells the device to you, assuming that you are purchasing it "in person" at a Verizon location. If you order the device over the phone directly from Verizon, the registration is performed before it is shipped to you. This process is exactly the same as the one required when assigning a new phone to your account. In essence, the data device is a phone.

If you purchased the device "in the box" as it were, from a retailer like Best Buy, it must be assigned to your account. Doing this yourself is possible, but rather involved. The easiest way (as far as I know) to do so is with a PC running Windows. Of course, you must also have a data plan added to whatever voice plan you already have, if you don't already have one.

My recommendation is to take the device to a Verizon store. The people there can get you up and running in no time. If you don't already have a data plan, they will add it to your account at the same time.

Scott

P.S. When a device is assigned to your account, it authenticates on the mobile network with its unique MAC address (actually, its called a ESN/MEID in the case of a phone/connection device), thereby negating any need for username and password. -s

I had the same problem with my MBA and the UM175. After and hour on the phone with Verizon tech support (multiple renditions of install, uninstall, restart) and 2 hours back in the Verizon store (repeating the same thing) and tried with multiple different broadband card models, nothing worked. Eventually I just was refunded since nothing would work. I was using the exact same information you stated above (provided by Verizon tech support) but still nothing.

I am currently connected with the pantech modem. Here is my setup.. Hope it helps.

1. Installed the VZ Manager Software
2. Activated my USB Modem by connecting them confirming activation.3
3. Uninstall VZ Manager (Open VZ Manager and in the menu somewhere there is Uninstall)
4. Reboot
5. Insert USB and confirm if port is add
6. Open up network preferences and select the "Pantech Usb Modem"
7. Set the following settings:
Configuration: Default
Telephone Number: #777
Account Name: (Your phonenumber)@vzw3g.com example: 5551234567@vzw3g.com
password: vzw
I always check of the "Show modem status.." but this is preference
8. Click on Advanced
Vendor: Sierra
Modem: CDMA
9. Click OK
10. Then Click apply and you should be able to connect now.

Happy hacking....

Hi Joe,
I tried your method --- I have a UM150 that was being shared by 3 family members (myself included). I purchased a UM175 recently and quickly realized I couldn't interchange the two models without reinstalling VZAccess Manager all over again. ----

Unfortunately, it didn't work for me. I reached instruction item #7 above, but could not find an "ADVANCED" button/link, so I could not make sure vendor is "SIERRA" nor could I check "CDMA" for the modem.

I suspect this has something to do with the fact that once I completed item #7 (teleph #, acc't #, password) and clicked APPLY that the password was changed (to a long string of dots not resembling anything near the 3 dots for "vzw."

As a result, I keep geting the same error message the guy before me was complaining of ... "unable to connect ... due to error ..."

please help me --- what am I doing wrong or what else can I click to make this work???

Where is that "ADVANCED" button you reference in item #8 ??

Also, I don't know how important this is, but I am not seeing a "CONFIGURATION" box like you mention in item #7 (which you tell us should be set at "DEFAULT."
