Is it a smart (purple) playlist, or a regular (blue) playlist?

That's completely wrong then, if it's a regular playlist you should be able to drag files into it.

So - no error message? You're dragging them from your main music library over to the playlist?
Have you tried restarting itunes? Or even tried repairing itunes?

Well, you can't drag anything from the iPod over into the itunes music library. Itunes just doesn't work that way. Maybe I'm still misunderstanding what it is you're trying to do.

If you want to burn a disc, you have to have a playlist in itunes and then click on "burn disk".

It can't be a playlist under the "Devices" section of the source list, andit can't be the Party Shuffle playlist.

You have to click the Library icon in the Source list, and drag songs from there into the playlist.

The Source list has red boxes in it if you look at the last puctire of this article
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93474

The Library has a box around it. That's what you have to click on first,

edit - dont' follow any of those directions, of course, I was just trying to find a picture of the itunes source list and what I mean by Library

No, you can't drag files from the iPod into iTunes. That has never been an option.
