Need OF Expert Help Yaboot Questions for Booting Linux Firewire Drive PPC

I have 3 logical drives on a firewire drive and want to be able to use at least one to have a bootable Linux. One drive is already MacOSX 10.4.11 and boots nicely. The other two have F9 and Ubuntu8.04 on them and I can't seem to get either to boot, no matter what I do to yaboot.conf. I've been working on this for three or more weeks now and getting no help from any forum. I guess they consider this trivial and me an annoyance. I've read countless man pages, etc on yaboot, ybin, of, ofboot, mac-fdisk, etc, etc. There are no examples anywhere that I've looked on a yaboot.conf that will boot any distro on a fw drive. I can supply yaboot.conf that I have now or any other material. My three or four posts on forums were detailed and didn't get any responses, so if some kind person out there wants to help, just let me know what info is needed.

I did see that article and wasn't sure that I needed to go to that extreme to get the drive to boot. In installing Ubuntu, I noticed that it loaded the modules to address and use firewire drives. If push comes to shove, I guess I could get into compiling now, but I'm sure that'll take more days of trial and error. It just seems that all the things are available for this to boot, but I have one or two pegs in the wrong place and I was hoping that I could get straightened out on that.

Japanmac,

Maybe you can answer one question for me regarding if I ever decide to install Linux on my machine as a replacement for Mac OS X(since Leopard is the highest we will all go who own powerpc). I am thinking of getting yellowdog Linux which supports powerpc processors, however I am a little concerned since with all my fans running and nap mode enabled.

In other words, will the fans rev and roar up so loud now that I wouldn't be booting into Mac OS X? Does Yellow Dog Linux provide a nap mode protocol so that I can keep my mac quiet? I haven't gotten the program yet, in this country, the economy is very bad, and am unemployed right now.

Please answer my question.. I know you like to criticize me for posting on here, but please answer this one for me.

Kindest regards
Erik

This is Steve again with my two cents about YDL. I've installed all kinds of distro's on my Fusion i386 vm's on my iMac and have Debian, openSuse, and Ubuntu on my G4 ppc Mac now, but I busted a gut trying to load YDL and once I got it loaded and tried it for a while, I blew it completely off my G4. It is not a distro I would recommend. As far as the nap goes, I guess you went to the various forums to see if anyone else had the fan problem. I know they called the mirror door G4 the wind tunnel. My B&W and my Graphite had very tolerable in the noise aspect.

Hi Erik-

I haven't played with Linux enough to really be able to say one way or the other.

I think Steve has offered you some good advice, and offered some possibly better alternatives in Linux than Yellow Dog.

Follow through on his advice, and post your questions in the recommended forums. Do, however, read their respective FAQ's, so that you can ask what hasn't already been explained.

Japamac,

I think Linux is a good alternative to MacOS. It requires some effort to understand and use it, but an average person with a desire to learn should have no problems.

As a follow up on the drive issue, I've come to the conclusion that Linux and the PPC booting set up doesn't lend itself to easy installation. I wiped my drive and am now trying to install openSUSE on it. That sounds weird, but openSUSE doesn't boot on the ppc like the other distro's. It uses LILO and some other tricks, but I'm no expert there. I'm just doing this install for my own curiosity. The Germans have done a bang up job on openSUSE in both the installation program and in their documentation. I tend to be a Debian kind of guy, but all the distro's have their good and bad points. Thanks for the help.

BTW, my wife is Japanese and she has the fancy Powerbook Pro. She says she needs it for her Koto work, but I think all of us know better. 🙂

This I came to understand (through various readings) as well.
Kinda' made me draw a blank as to suggestions, especially due to limited Linux knowledge....

Sounds like an interesting version. Found several mentions while looking for some info for Nadav.

Koto, as in the musical instrument? And she has a MacBook Pro?
Geez, some people have all the neat toys! 😉
BTW, I love Koto music. Something about the organic quality of the sound....lovely!

On the drive. OpenSuse had the same problem only with different symptoms. Oh well. IDE drives don't seem to be a bother, but forget the firewire anyway. Coincidental, my Debian is hosed. I can get into the desktop GUI and use a terminal, but can't launch any apps. Time for a fix there.

Koto the musical instrument. She is a professional Koto player and travels all over the place to give concerts. Her web site is www.yoshikocarlton.com. She doesn't manage the site, she only supplies the material. Her agent is webmaster.

Hi!

The Linux Kernel automatically utilizes the “Nap Mode” on a suitable system. You should see a kernel message if you run dmesg.

However, on some systems, especially SMP G4's, the kernel disabled the nap mode feature due to problems.

If you are interested: http://lkml.org/lkml/2006/3/11/91

So YDL will automatically use nap mode if suitable.

Hope that helped,
Andreas.
