"Barcode" lines on mouse cursor and on desktop screen

Went for a short break earlier today. Came back and the screen saver was on. Moved the mouse a bit and all of a sudden the screen was full of "barcode-like" little lines around all the desktop icons and the mouse cursor.

When opening a window (such as this website), that window is clean. But the toolbar at the bottom and the "file, Edit, etc." bar at the top have these tiny grey dots all over.

Searched a bit for a previous case but wasn't able to find anything similar. Can anyone help?

Txs!

Got exactly the same issue with an Imac 20".
Not mine, sadly, a friend of mines. I say sadly as he hasn't bought applecare and can't afford it right now!

I'd installed 10.5, and it kept not booting (with the sold blue screen appearing), then sometimes it would freeze with grey 'barcode' like lines and graphical distortion behind the mouse.

So I reformatted it with 10.4 and the same thing happens, except without the freezing on startup.

Now there is a difference; Apple hardware test comes up fine. So does techtool.
No fault found.

Are we sure this is the graphics cards?

Any ideas? Literally he's at the end of his tether living with the issue.
