Difference between layout format and word processing format

I have read the manual, help, discussions and am stumped. I look in the manual for a particular action and it won't work. Is this because I am in the wrong format?

What is the "particular action" you are trying to accomplish? There are some functions, such as inserting page or section breaks, that are available in word processing that are not available in page layout. Most of these differences are due to the fact that word processing has a text layer, page layout is a "blank canvas."

Telling us which is this _particular action_ would be useful.

A word Processing document offers an "endless" body text which we may divide in pages, sections, layouts, columns. We may also add floating or embedded blocks of different nature.

A page layout document is made of several pages which doesn't accept a "body text".
We must put every components in blocks floating on the blank background.
Given that, there is no page or section or layout break available.
When we are in a text block we may insert column break.

Don't know what I would do without your help. You have hit one of the problems I was having. Let me summarize what I think you said:

All breaks are available in WP
The only break in layout is column when we are in a text block

Could you clarify " We may also add floating or embedded blocks of different nature." (WP) What is a floating or embedded block? Blocks that you create yourself, like adding a text block;then move around?

"We must put every components in blocks floating on the blank background" (layout)-I assume you mean the blocks that are shown when I select " show layout"

This has been very helpful. Is there a way to determine all or most differences instead of asking you about each and every problem or at least a general guide

It would appear that WP has more inherent flexibility than layout, but layout has a lot of the work done for us. My immediate goal is to produce a newsletter with graphics to be used as a hardcopy and in a email form.

Thanks!

I'm an endUser like you.

When I respond, I tell us what I learnt reading the Help, the PDF User Guide and looking at the menus available in each kind of document.

I prefer the response look in the Help or in the PDF User Guide because I know that the responses are given in an English better than mine.

For instance:
What is a floating or embedded block?

search for floating in the Help and you will get detailed explanations.

It's the same for most of the problems you may encounter.
Sometimes it's more efficient to search in the PDF which allow us to search in the document's text body while the Help is an indexed document and indexes are always the result of drastic choices.
