using airport wep to broadcast to a pc

i can broadcast to a pc successfuly with airport if the signal is unsecure but when i send a wep secure signal the pc sees it but can't connect any ideas ?

mini mac g4, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

Hi Harry,

Is the WEP password exactly 5 or 13 ASCCII characters, or exactly 10 or 26 HEX characters?

Not that WEP is secure... takes about 1 to 3 seconds to break it these days, WPA or WPA2 is the way to go.

i dont know which wep the mac only says wep and i dont see a option for wpa2 on the mac the pc a toshiba doesnt say which wep either but it the toshiba does offer a wpa2 option which i would use if i could find it on the mac ...additionally hex or the other one you mentioned i cant find...as to which wep

How/where did you set this up? WEP will likely be determined by the length of the password you but in on some machines.

The iBook may have an original AP card and not do WPA or WPA2, some would with a firmware update.

Under the Airport icon, click Create new Network, then you'll see 40 bit or 128 bit for WEP key, 40 requires 5 ASCII length, 128 bit requires 13 ASCII length.

ok under network i went to airport then network name then edit (this is on a mac mini g4) i see lots of options of wep..leap..wpa enterprise ...wpa personal both 1 and 2 i tried each of these one at a time then i went to sharing internet airport options i only see 40 and 128 choices i tried them all which i matched on the toshiba laptop it has 802.1 open shared wpa2 personal wpa personal wpa2 enterprise wop enterprise where i matched what was saved on the mac i could see the mac minis signal but could nt connect...e gad

Where is this... the Sharing Pref Pane?

At what point does it not connect? Any error message?

Have you tried logging into the Mini from PC with the Mini's Username, and the Mini's Password? Or is it before that it quits?

tried to connect now from the pc laptop error message ....this network is mrked as a hidden network and is either not in range or the wireless settings savd on this computer do not match the settings of the network..trying from the mini again i get teh error message on the pc there might be a poblem with one or more network adapters on this computer ...try connectiong again to harry osell's mac mini or to a different network if you won or set up this network reset your wireless router or access and try connecting again ...i had gone to preference network location Harry Osells mini show airport edit network name ..

Well, if I'm reading that right, then that is the problem, no two devices may have the same IP... it'd be like two houses on the same street with the same address... where would the Mail get delivered?

OOPs, that first one is your outside Clearwire IP, the one that connects the whole world to you... I've asked it be edited out! 🙂

In Network Pref Pane>Show:> Nretwork ports... we are looking for which interface on the Mac might have a 10.2.18.x IP.

in talking to toshiba i had destroyed the lan setting s but he fixed them i asked what is the toshiba ip address he said 192.172.255.255.240.0 thats toshiba but mac is 66.53.239.4

still looking for 10 etc
