iPhone hard restore won't work

When I hold down the sleep/home button it just keeps turning on and off (I have the iPhone screen of death) Am I doing something wrong? Please Help!

Dell DIMENSION DIM4700, Windows XP, Original iPhone

when you see the apple logo, release the sleep button, while still holding the home button for about another 10 sec.

The standard troubleshooting steps in order are; power your iPhone off and on, Reset, Restore with iTunes.

There is no hard or soft Reset. There is just a Reset, which is similar to a computer restart.

To do a Reset, press and hold the Home button and the Sleep/Wake or On/Off button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo and then release - ignoring the slide to turn off prompt when doing so.
