What software exists, on the Mac platform, to be able to convert a commercial, full-length DVD movie into a format that can go on the new iPod 5G? For example, I want to convert "Return of the King", which I own, to be able to play it on my iPod. What software does this?
Use Handbrake, available at
http://handbrake.m0k.org; that will do the entire process from DVD in to iPod video out.
There are over 200 threads in this forum devoted to DVD conversion and general video conversion. If you have problems.. search, chances are it has already been answered.
Go back to the discussions thread a few days ago. It has been discussed over and over and over. And to answer your question: Handbrake. It's for Mac, it's free, and works like a charm.
If you don't have your dvd ripped to the mac first you'll need to do so using mactheripper. I've been converting tons of movies in anticipation for the arrival of my 5G ipod. I'm using handbrake and it's works great. I ran into one problem with it but found the answer right away on their forum. After handbrake reaches 100% you still need to wait about another 10 minutes till it's actually done. If you choose a single pass you are looking at about 30-40 minutes to convert a full movie to a mp4. If you choose a second pass you're looking at about an hour.
Not bad, we're too much of a "I want it done now" society, so I'm happy with the wait.
An irrelevant problem I have is all my DVD's are wide screen!

Just an additional note regarding HandBrake: It should not be necessary to extract/rip the DVD before using HandBrake. However, doing so, should greatly increase the speed at which HandBrake runs.
Thanks for the advice. Assuming I use Handbrake only, how much time should it take to process a 120 minute movie on an iMac G5 1.8ghz with 1G RAM? I'm just looking for a ballpark figure.
For the most part this is dependent on a number of things: the platform in use, CPU speed, number of applications running simultaneously, and specific settings you elect to use, etc. On my G5 (Original 2GHz), this runs from 0.9 to 1.5 times the length of the video.
