Scene selection problem

I made a video in iMovie and imported it into iDVD. Everything worked fine until I had put it on a DVD. I had iDVD made scenes every 4 minutes and now I can't select them. Everything works fine in iDVD, but it does not once you put it on DVD.

Here is what I found out:
- Every think works in iDVD. Selection of scenes does not work only on a DVD.
- Only the first scene can be selected and the whole move is only one chapter.
- It works perfectly if I use Best Performance quality option. If I use High Quality or Professional quality, the scenes will not work.
- I can highlight the scenes, but after I select them nothing happens. The chosen scene stays highlighted and another scene can not be highlighted. If I press menu at this point, I get to the same scene selection but now I can highlight other scenes. It looks like the scenes are linked to scene menu that behaves like a movie scene.
- I have read that this problem occurs with Themes 7.0 so it can be avoided by using 6.0. I don't consider it a solution.

If any of you found a way to solve this issue, let me know please. Hopefully, apple developers read this forum as well as start doing something with it.

I have already tried to update iDVD, but there are no more updates available.

Hi. I'm having the same problem as Rimmon. The scene selection works fine in iDVD's preview mode but when burned, this problem arises. I saved it as a VIDEO_TS folder first and burned it in Toast. I was able to play the TS folder fine but the burned disc has the chapters laid out and they highlight but only the first chapter is playable. This happens with both, SL and DL discs.

Sometimes a direct copy burned within Toast will work just fine whereas iDvd might fail in terms of stronger chapter links .....give it a try. A second approach is to lower the burn speed but if that too fails then,

the only other thing I can suggest is using a beefier app like DVDSP /FCS 2/ apple's pro apps that establish much stronger and highly reliable link/s to all chapters.

Robert:

Save the project as a disk image first and play it with DVD Player to make sure it plays correctly before committing to disc. If it does play as it should on the Mac then the problem with the burning process.

When you're ready to burn use Disk Utility or Toast to burn the disk image to disc using the slowest burn speed available. Also use quality DVDs. Verbatim and Toyo -R discs are two recommended brands.

I did the disk image. It quit the first time, then the second time I was able to burn the image. Unfortunately it still doesn't play the scenes. I tried using best performance this time. I've cut the video to about 1 hour and 8 min. Doesn't seem to matter. I did buy some Verbatim dvd-r's but I'm not going to try them until the disc image plays properly. When I highlight the scene, and hit enter...it comes up with "not permitted". It plays perfect in IDVD. I've tried several other options such as quicktime to get an MOV file etc. This took forever, but I left it as one scene. If that's what I have to do so be it, but I am not happy! I do not intend to go to imovie hd or garage band. This is not a solution. This program should work...it doesn't! I have lots of space on the drive 27 GB. I have 1 G of Ram, and the activity meter never maxes out. Any other suggestions?

Ok...here's what I did. Seems to have solved the problem. I burned the movie to quicktime. Then I imported the quicktime movie into Imovie HD as a single clip. Imovie HD allows you to put in chapter markers. (Why they took that out in imovie 8 I'll never know!!!) Then I exported the movie to iDVD. I was able to burn the disc image and get the scenes to work. I also dumped a pile of stuff off the hard drive so I had almost 100 GB free. I burned the image at the slowest rate possible 4X. Then I burned the DVD. I did buy some Verbatim dvd's but found that the fuji ones I had worked just as well. This is definitely sub-optimal but at least it works. I won't be using imovie 8 for anything after this.

I have just realised the reason for my problem. I wasn't able to access chapters. They highlight but can't be accessed.

The problem is in the iDVD fine print. In the manual, it says that DL discs have problems when saving as a disc image first. Apparently, according to iDVD, the chapters will only work on a DL disc if it is burned straight from iDVD. This is a flaw in the software so, hopefully, Apple will address this in a future update. I tend not to burn from iDVD because it uses too much RAM to encode the file so, I encode it all on my laptop and then transfer it over for burning in Toast. If I do that with a DL disc, the chapters won't play.
