Resolution issue with Dynex tv

I just bought a 19" Dynex tv to use as a monitor via the VGA port. If I want to switch to 1440x900 resolution, I have to go into Displays, rotate the monitor by 90 degrees and then hit "Revert". This puts the screen into 1440x900 at 59.9Hz. I have to do this every time I restart my computer, as the resolution refuses to save on a reboot. Simply selecting the 1440x900 60Hz option causes the screen to flicker wildly.

Is the problem the mac or the monitor?

Given that there are two of you having this problem with the same TV, that suggests to me the TV is mainly at fault, though it's hard to say exactly what the problem is. The first thing I would recommend is to just try and get your money back and get a more recognized brand of TV. But if you can't do that, and if you are determined to get things to work right with the Dynex, then here are more suggestions.

2nd suggestion; don't shut the mini down. That would be the simplest solution. If the problem occurs from starts or restarts, then don't restart. Just put the mini to sleep when you don't want to use it anymore. I rarely restart my mini. Usually I only restart when software installs require it. Otherwise it goes for months without rebooting.

If you don't find that a satisfactory solution, then my third suggestion would be to download and install SwitchRes X and see if you can use it to 1) gain insight into what the problem might be and, 2) build a custom resolution that the mini will boot to that the Dynex finds acceptable.
