Mail can't send email! Selected server not responding

Hello

I've got 4 emails set up in my Mail on 10.4.11. They are all IMAP, 2 of them Gmail, one a .mac and one a school. All emails are IMAP capable and it has worked in the past on other computers and even this one. But recently, I can't send any mail for any. I can receive it, and even the Gmail is talking to each other because if I start a Draft in Mail and then log into my Gmail on Safari, I see the Apple Draft there.

I get this message:

"Cannot send message using the server smtp.gmail.com.

The server response was: 5.7.0 Must issue a STARTTLS command first. d34sm8904510and.3

Use the pop-up menu below to try a different outgoing mail server. All messages will use this server until you quit Mail or change your network settings."

I've checked my settings over and over and can even send mail from my Treo using the IMAP gmail settings that I'm using for this Mail.

Possibly a network issue?? But I'm using AT&T direct DSL, no routers yet.

Thanks
Chris

The message seems to indicate that you need to enable SSL in the SMTP Server settings in Mail. The outgoing server should also have SSL enabled. Check those and change them if necessary, then try sending again and it should work.
