Batch printing of Multiple Documents

You can batch print by creating a printer icon on your Desktop.
In System Preferences > Print & Fax, Drag the printer’s icon from the Printers list to the desktop.
Once you have done this, you can drag multiple items onto the desktop Printer Icon and batch print them.

If yoy drag the printer icon on to the desktop (actually from thereyou can drag it to the Dock if preferred) you can then drag multiple docs on to it and they'll print.

It's not a great method. Also, I find that the pages sizes often come out wrong.

You'd think there would be something much more systematic around nowadays, wouldn't you!

No. I guess when you have a document ready to print and click Print, the data is processed and sent according to the format open, either as a Word format or PDF format.
When changing from Word to PDF mid stream, it still thinks it is Word and the transmission of data doesn't square with the data format. If that analysis is correct I don't know of a solution.
