Help! My cat laid on my keyboard and my mac is soooo messed up!
My cat laid on my MacBook Pro keyboard while I was out today because I was stupid and forgot to close it. I noticed some changes to file names - like xxxxxxlmlkkk - which looked like he had hit various keys. I also had a new library which has some but not all of the folders that were in the original library. I restarted the computer and when it rebooted, it looked different - as if my factory settings were restored. My screen background was different, my dock didn't have most of my programs on it and when I opened programs, they acted as if it was the first time I ever opened them before. I think all of my programs are intact. Most of my data was there, although my address book and Safari bookmarks gone. Of course, those are the only things I don't have backed up. I opened the disk utility and ran repair disk permissions on my HD and got lots of messages that passwords were incorrect and that it corrected them. I don't know if doing that made things worse. I have been manually resetting my computer back to what it was before, but is there any way in OSX(10.4.11) that I can do a system restore similar to what PC users can do? My tissue box is nearby and I've pulled out a big mass of my hair already!
Carolyn, thanks. I wish I understood exactly what the cat did. I've restored my background, screen saver, dock etc. but I have to re set up preferences in all of my applications. Mail acts as if I've never opened it before, for example, so I have to set up my incoming and outgoing servers etc. My biggest annoyance is that my address book is gone. Do you know where I can find it and how I can restore my previous entries. I had about 300 entries and I don't really want to re-input them. Thanks!
Hmmm ... it looks to me like when my cat laid on the keyboard, he created a duplicate version of the Library folder named Library and the old one has a strange name lmkkkkklop... Library. I kid you not. I'm assuming that his paws just hit the keys the right way to change the name. The renamed version has all of my settings, bookmarks etc. in it. The new one does not. It's like a virgin library file that you would have when you purchased a new computer. My guess is that the start up is pointing to the new "virgin" library versus the renamed one.
I can't see how your Address Book can completely disappear... so try a Spotlight search. Click the round icon top right in your Menu with the magnifying glass icon. Type in: Address Book
Hopefully you'll see Address Book in there. At the top of list click where it says: Show All
If you see Address Book... click the little circle on the right with the arrow in it. It will give you the path to where it is.
I think what you need to do is to renamed your prior library folder lmkkkkklop to library.
I renamed the library folder in my t3 account. The system will let you rename the library folder but will immediately create a new library folder. Hence your cat renamed the library folder . I think you're missing information is in the library folder and you could look around for it . It is not simple to rename the prior library folder back to library.
Here is what you need to do, I assume you are working from an administrator account.
0) I suggest backing up your system or at least any important data. Be sure to backup lmkkkkklop.
1) create a new administrator account.
From an administrator account , click on the Blue Apple. click on system preferences. Click on account. Click on the lock symbol. Click on the +. Fill in the account information and check that is administrator account.
2) log off from your prior administrator counterparts.
3) log on to the new administrator account. Now you need to get into the terminal.
what you need to do is to rename lmkkkkklop
here is an example:
Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
# be very careful from Terminal. You can trash your entire system when you do a sudo bash. When done, enter exit
# typed in your login password from the current account.
# Your password will not appear when done press enter.
mac $ sudo bash
Password:
root # cd /Users
/Users
root # ls
...
t3/
root # # here he is need to substitute to your prior user name for t3
root # # it is the short user name
root # cd t3
/Users/t3
root # # You may want to use ls -l
root # ls
.CFUserTextEncoding Library copy/ Pictures/
.DS_Store Library-old/ Public/
Desktop/ Library-old2/ Sites/
Documents/ Movies/
Library/ Music/
root # # the mv command is the move command and in this format it does the rename.
root # mv -i Library Library-older
root # mv -i Library-old Library
root # # You may want to use ls -l
root # ls
.CFUserTextEncoding Library copy/ Pictures/
.DS_Store Library-old2/ Public/
Desktop/ Library-older/ Sites/
Documents/ Movies/
Library/ Music/
root # man mv
root # # type the letter q to quit
root # man ls
root # # type the letter q to quit
root # # type the letter q to quit
root # # the man command for manual list cryptic information about the command
root # exit
Thanks for your help everyone! You helped me figure out what was wrong. The cat apparently renamed my Library folder, which then created a new one named just "Library". When I restarted the computer, it looked to the new Library folder for all of my settings and caches. Since mine weren't in the new folder, the computer booted up as if it had factory settings.
Here's what I did to resolve it. I renamed both folders. I renamed the new library folder to library 02 and the lmkkkkkkkkop...folder to its original name, just "Library". Then, when I restarted the computer again, everything was back to my former settings. Now I'm just trying to figure out if I can delete the library folder the cat created.
"Now I'm just trying to figure out if I can delete the library folder the cat created."
Compare it contents to the
real"Library folder, to ascertain if everything is there, then pull it out to the
Desktop, and if everything is hunky-dory for a few days, you can
trash it.
Everyone - Here is how I got my problem fixed after my cat renamed my library folder. I found out that my local Apple Store offered free services called the Genius Bar. I scheduled an appointment, took my laptop and one of my external drives to the store and within 15 minutes, they had fixed it. The genius logged into my laptop as a root user and recreated my library file using one I had backed up to my external hard drive. It really helped that I had everything backed up.
Voila, problem fixed. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions and never, ever rename your library folder.
The guys and gals at the Genius Bars rock! I'm so glad you were able to find a solution and thanks for reporting back, much appreciated.
Here's a tip: My cats walk across my keyboard when I'm no looking and accidentally turn on the Num lock (F6). There's a green light that will go on just to the left of the F6 key if it's on. I'm not sure if it's the exactly the same on a MBPro but it probably similar to that of an iBook or PBook.
