Will the alarm clock work if I turn iPhone off?

I tend to use my phone as an alarm clock because it doesn't wake my boyfriend up as often as the obnoxious alarm clock does but, when I tested it out the alarm only seems to function if the phone is in standby. When I completely shut off the phone it seems that it does not wake itself up in order to wake me up. Is this actually the case? That seems like an important thing to not overlook when engineering the software for the iPhone. Please let me know if the phone will not wake up for the alarm clock so I won't be late for work!

Then it is still an understandable question, is it not? and no need to get fired up about it?
and if that relaly is the case, then it is still not plausible why apple would not have managed to create a "sleep mode" where it doesnt react to the buttons\screen and is not connected to any network and therefor it should be ok to ask about it\for an update later on. heck just give it two sliders for the shutdown.."normal" and "sleep"
