Songs out of order on ipod, fine when connected and viewing album in iTunes

I imported a CD, and then copied the album over to my ipod. In my library (mac) and when viewing the song list on my ipod (in iTunes, with ipod connected to my mac), both show the songs in the right order, and play them in the right order (from track 1 to track 12) on the mac. No problem...

...But, when my ipod is disconnected from my computer, the songs are in the wrong order and I can not find a pattern to it. It is not alphabetical, by size, length, or any other sorting pattern I can figure out. I have tried everything I can find to get them to play in the right order, but to no avail.

Anyone have any ideas?

ha that trouble myself. Extremely frustrating and sorting the tracks into a playlist isn't really a fix. But this is, just did it and relieved to see all the tracks in order on my ipod now

It's to do with the Artist and Album Artist fields in the track info. Just highlight the entirety of the album in question, bring up Get Info, under the Album Artist field punch in the artists name and hit OK. Bingo

Sometimes not every track has the Album Artist field filled in and hence they get re-ordered.

Hope all is well after this

I have either the same or a similar problem.

Reading about my situation may shed light on your problems.

If the Track# has been carefully ordered and defined, (as in 1 of 18, 2 of 18, etc.), the Playlist is out of order when viewed on the iPod.

I created new playlists using various approaches:

1. I tried highlighting all and creating a list from selected, it did not eliminate the problem.
2. I tried selecting all and clicking Artist and Album Artist in Get Info window as well as copy/pasting the identical info in each field (can be done all at once), this did not eliminate the problem.
3. I tried renaming each song adding the sequence number to the song name, it did not eliminate the problem.

What worked:
1. was to take one of these playlists (there was no need to delete them before moving onto another attempt I just added a number to the next "Test Playlist")
2. I clicked on the menu bar to sort the playlist according to that category. By the time I had created the 3rd playlist I had more than one option to sort by. I could use the Song Name or the Track#.
3. Once I had a playlist in proper sequence in iTunes I selected all of the songs and created a new playlist from the selection. That built a playlist that appeared in proper sequence in the iPod.

The key (to my problem) seems to be having the songs arranged in the desired order before making a playlist. IOW, if you randomly pick songs throughout your inventory of songs listed in iTunes the playlist will sort them in the order they appear in iTunes at the time the playlist is created. It doesn't matter what Track# you have designated unless you have the songs arranged in iTunes based on Track#'s. I have all of my songs arranged by Artist so the Track# is subordinate. I don't know if there is a way to prioritize categories. I only know how to change the category that all songs are arranged by.

Addendum:

I have since found that you can create a Playlist either using the above method I outlined or using this approach:

1. Under File select New Playlist.
2. Name it anything or leave it as is (Untitled).
3. Drag and drop each song individually into the Playlist.

#3 is the key. Nothing in the Get Info window overrides the sequence that you build when the songs are added one at a time to the Playlist in the order that you want them to be played.
