FTP Sharing Problem

Hello all,

I am trying to setup my G5 as an FTP server. I have had success setting up access with AFP and VNC with my routers (Linksys & Airport) via port forwarding. FTP is not working however.

FTP is working fine in my local network, but when accessing from the outside I get the following error using Transmit:

+*Could not retrieve file listing*.+
+Server said:+
+Could not open data connection to port 38619: Connection refused+
+Error -160: could not start data transfer+

It connects...sort of... and I can navigate to the two parent directories (user and / ), but the files are not listed. I get the same error message each time I go up a directory.

Any assistance would be very appreciated. Thanks!
Matt.

This is the major problem with using FTP.

FTP does not use one port - it uses multiple ports. You will need to setup port forwarding for at last port 20 and 21, but possibly others depending on whether you're using active or passive FTP (tell the client to toggle their FTP client settings to find the combination that works).
