ScreenSavers not working on Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.4
When the screensaver tries to activate after the preset time, or the screensaver is activated by a hotcorner, the screen fades to black, then pops back to my desktop (including whatever's open at the time, basically the interface that you use when you're using the computer, what comes before the screen saver activates, hard to explain, yet extremely obvious.) Then, it repeats the cycle until interrupted by a keystroke or mouse gesture. When the ScreenSaver system preference is open, the bar to the left where the screensavers are listed is blank white. The same goes for the preview area on the right. The check boxes on the bottom still appear, but the rest of the area is blank. Basically, it looks like the screensavers are gone. After a few seconds, System Preferences crashes. I checked all the folders from the Finder (HDD>System>Library>Screen Savers) (HDD>Library>Screen Savers) (UserName>Library>Screen Savers), and the screensavers are still there, all uncorrupted. I think it was working yesterday, but I didn't notice. I know it was working less than a week ago though. Any ideas?

I have not solved it yet, unfortunately. Have you installed any software around the time your screensaver stopped working? Growl, for example? I installed that around the time my screensaver disappeared. It's just a theory, but I have no concrete evidence as to whether Growl affects the ScreenSaver.
Another thing I have installed is Safari 4 beta with WebKit nightly builds. Started using WebKit about the same time as Growl and the screensaver problem. Same goes for Stattoo.
I also had this problem after installing the latest Safari 4 earlier today. I have not tried uninstalling yet. I had an rss feed screensaver which I assume uses some portion of safari to run. Exiting safari does not help, nor does trying to change it through system preferences (crashes system preferences). I reported it as a bug.
I've had Safari 4 for a while without problems, but I haven't downloaded any recent builds of Safari 4. However, I did recently install the WebKit nightly builds. Do you think that it might be WebKit that's the culprit?
Same problem for me. Safari 4 was the last change, and Console reports the following ScreenSaver-related crashes:
9/9/08 1:48:57 AM com.apple.launchd[140] ([0x0-0x3b03b].com.apple.ScreenSaver.Engine[647]) Exited abnormally: Bus error
9/9/08 1:49:51 AM com.apple.launchd[140] ([0x0-0x3a03a].com.apple.systempreferences[643]) Exited abnormally: Bus error
9/9/08 1:58:21 AM Finder[162] [QL ERROR] quicklookd crashed while thumbnailing
file://localhost/System/Library/Screen%20Savers/Arabesque.qtz
The system appears to crash whenever dealing with any of the Quartz screen savers (those with extension .qtz). ScreenSavers ending in .saver and .slideSaver work just fine with Safari 4. As is, my system is in a much less-usable state with Safari 4, so I will be uninstalling it.
