Contacts not syncing

All of a sudden my contacts aren't syncing between my iphone and my mac and I dont know why...everything else syncs just fine.

Also after I sync them my mac always freezes, does this happen to anyone else?

check there isn't another window opened up behind the itunes window, you have to confirm any changes and as the window is hidden behind the itunes window itunes will just sit on syncing contacts appearing to not be working when in fact it's waiting for confirmation, this also applies to calender as well, hope this helps, if this isn't the problem then i have no idea

1. This topic is not 'answered' - ie there's no good solution posted.
2. I share the problem - my contacts won't sync at all now (ie contacts I enter on the iPhone won't transfer to my iMac address book). Previously when syncd, they annoyingly duplicated many on the iPhone (ie in my iPhone contacts list, many - but not all - contacts appear twice).

Thanks Andrew,
Like you the Contacts sync used to work but not anymore. I never had any problems with duplicates so maybe I was just lucky but it isn't working now so we'll just have to wait until v2.2 for Apple to fix this. At least it can be done manually through iTunes.

I actually rang Apple Support about this and they just directed me to this website...
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1679

Which wasn't particularly helpful and because the sync issue doesn't work with my iMac or my G5 I wasn't prepared to reinstall anything or setup a new user.

I have managed to get my Contacts to sync!
After Reading the Apple doc about sync troubleshooting I made a new user and then synced and everything worked!

Maybe this means the Address Book prefs or Sync prefs were corrupted in some way. Now I need to spend a few hours polishing up my new User environment which is somewhat inconvenient but no bother really if it gets things working.

Just to add to my last post the contacts wouldn't even sync with iTunes manually so the link with mobileme and the address book was totally broken.

I'd be interested to know if making a new user works for others with sync issues.

David.

I just got my iphone 3 weeks ago. My contacts synced at first, but now, when I add a contact to my phone or computer, they don't update each other through Mobile Me as I believe is supposed to happen.
Following the directions of the link listed in the previous response http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1679, I went to my preferences, went to Movile Me, went to sync and now the only option is to replace all data from either phone or computer, or merge, which I am pretty sure will duplicate everything. There doesn't seem to be an update option, the choice to add only what is new to both.
Am I missing something? Thanks for help.

Denise,

That seems to be the problem I was having. The only solution for me other than manually importing all my contacts into MobileMe as vCards was to create a new user as I mentioned in my previous post.

FIRST THING TO DO IS... Backup your address book contacts by going to the Address Book app and selecting the File Menu then Export Contacts as Address Book Archive. Save to an external disk for safe keeping in case of disaster you can re-import from this archive.

Go to System Preferences and then click on Accounts. Make a new user, give yourself a password, click the admin control checkbox then log in as that new user via the Log Out command in the Apple Menu. Then go to your Address Book app and then go back to System Prefs - MobileMe and then choose to sync just the Contacts and click Sync Now and it should work like it did for me. I have done this on my G5 at work and my iMac at home and it has fixed the problem except now I have start making my new User environment as I like it.

One problem I've noticed immediately is that all my vital folders in my old User home folder are all locked and deny me access because of lack of privileges, they all have the No Entry symbol on them. I have changed the Privileges in the Get Info of this home folder and still I can't get access, maybe someone can help me with this!
