Email connection error icons

In the Mac Mail pane (in the MAILBOXES margin on the left) an icon is showing (grey circle with a white 'lightening strike/zig zag line in the middle) after one of my email accounts. The account name is greyed out and doesn't seem to respond to anything!
What does the icon mean and what can I do to revive the address and use it?
