G3 Wallstreet screen goes dark after startup

Hi all

On startup my G3 Wallstreet screen is fine until after the initial Apple logo, then when the progress bar goes along it goes dark. I then have to make the backlight come on again by pushing the brightness button. Anyone have any clues?

Running OSX (which is fine apart from this problem) tried the reset feature and repair permissions but has no effect.

My battery is dead so it's always on the powercord,

Help.

Powerbook G3 300, Mac OS X (10.2.x), It's got a 70gb hard drive that has been partitioned to accept OSX.t

adamgritz,

I'm quoting myself from an earlier post...

"This behavior on the Wallstreet running any version of OSX is normal •IF• you have no working main battery and you also disconnect the power adapter. Once all power is lost to the power manager, OSX somehow modifies the power manager in a way that causes backlight issues. Booting back into 9.x cures the problem; in addition, this issue does not occur with 9.x and loss of power, only OSX. As long as the power manager is maintained via a charged main battery and/or power adapter, this "fix" will stick. The PRAM battery (internal rechargeable backup battery) can maintain the power manager for a few hours if fully charged (and working) without any other source of power but your 10 year old Wallstreet probably has a dead or weak battery...these powerbooks will run without a PRAM battery."

In addition, if you do not have 9.x installed, any bootable non-OSX CD will solve the problem.
