iPods won't connect to computer

Ok, Here's what Apple's site says

Reset, Retry, Restart, Reinstall , Restore

Before starting, make sure your iPod is fully charged and then toggle the Hold switch on and off.

1. Reset your iPod.
2. Retry with a different USB or FireWire port.
3. Restart your computer and make sure you have the latest software updates installed.
4. Remove iTunes software and then reinstall iTunes software from latest versions on the web.
5. Restore your iPod. See “Updating and Restoring iPod Software” in the user's guide.

#5.. Can't do since Itunes can't or won't recognize that the ipod is even hooked up.

How does one get Itunes to recognize that the ipod is hooked up? Please do not tell me it requires to restore the software as that happens through Itunes... which is not working at all.

So basically, I have a $150 POS that'll hold whatever music I was able to get on it previously, but can't add anything else to it.

Anyone have any suggestions... or do I just need to wait for Apple to get the newer version of Itunes out?

Same thing is happening with me too. It it plugged into my iMac, but it won't charge, it won't turn on, and it isn't recognized by iTunes. I also noticed that the battery life wasn't showing it's true charge. It was green and looked to be about 60% charged, but suddenly went down to ZERO and said the battery needed recharging. Totally weird.

i have an ipod nano (3g) and whenever my ipod is connected, nothing happened. NOW i have an answer!!!

in itunes press 'help' and then 'run diagnostics' an select the ipod connectivity tests (3rd down). After the test, in ports, press the button on the side and it should go to the apple help site for this particlar reason. this page is what you want - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1363?viewlocale=en_US

if you go through the steps then it should eventually work. mine worked after the second step (Remove iTunes). note: it doesnt just remove it, it reinstalls.

Have you tried using different USB cables and/or different USB ports?

When the iPod is connected, find out if it appears in your Device Manager:
Click Start, right-click My Computer and click Manage
On the left-hand side click on Device Manager
Scroll down to Universal Serial Bus controllers and click the + in front of it to expand it
If you see "Apple iPod" listed there, right-click on it and choose Uninstall
Then, restart the computer with the iPod connected to reinstall the driver

It might also be helpful to disconnect any other USB devices (such as digital cameras, printers, scanners, etc) from your computer to make sure the devices aren't causing a USB overload.

Hi, I am having same problem. I went to synch my ipod after purchasing some music and was unable to even get the ipod to show up in the iTunes window. I checked the USB connection with another application and it worked fine. I have a MacBook. Thanks.

i also am having the same problem...i tried doing what you said but apple ipod wasnt listed...the don not disconnct screen wont even show up on the ipod...its not evn charging it..and the only other usb hook up thats pluged in is my g card....what do i do?

This happens to me too. It happened the last time there was an itunes update as well. I looked the issue up on the board but found no answers then a fix came along and everything was fine again. . . .
Then another software update which I hesitated to download, thinking (quite rightly as it turned out) it might happen again.
Seems to me that apple are becoming increasingly slapdash about these things. Test your software first. Anyone have any answers to this?

I'm having the same problem!! Seems to be happening since the last iTunes software update. I connect my ipod but can't find it in iTunes to sync, nor does the ipod say anything about being connected. What's the deal!?

..I am using iTunes 8.01 (12), I have 2 ipod shuffle's. I purchased a Belkin usb illuminated 7 port hub and ran the cable from the back of the tower, I have plugged both of the units into this, at first I restored them (Separately plugged in one at a time) I then restarted my computer, plugged in one waited, it showed up, an then the other, and it showed up. I can now load each one with whatever I want so I hope that this gives hope to anyone else out there..My only complaint is that it takes a while longer than I remember for them to show up..spinning ball of joy ! however it does work.The other iPods i don't own, so I can't test them yet. good luck and remember to follow the 5 R's if in doubt..

I sometimes have this problem on my PowerMac G4 with a third-party USB 2.0 card. My solution is to put the computer to sleep, then wake it up again. When it wakes it forces the iPod to be recognized.
