Migration, PPC to Intel

I'm considering making the jump from PPC to Intel, but am concerned that even using Migration Assistant, it's going to be a gamble for moving my old apps onto the new box.

I feel it's kind of the same raw deal OS9 users got when going to OSX, which is why I made sure to buy one of the last PPC models to ensure that I could still always use "Classic" and save access to my legacy apps/files. While I resisted that, eventually I found less and less need to go back to OS9 apps/data though, so it turned out OK.

This seems to be a whole different deal though since many of my current installed apps are locked in with key codes that I may or may not be able to resurrect (at least without a fair amount of hassle finding them all again...if I can). In this light, moving/transferring them over onto a new machine, as opposed to reinstalling them would be very preferable - almost mandatory - until I get to the point of not caring anymore and can just start over from scratch.

I'm OK with losing Classic now, but just how much else am I going to lose going to Intel?
Do the apps (that can work on Intel) migrate with their key codes intact? (If I hate it, will the computer from which I migrated, remain unscathed?)
And what about trying to migrate things that Intels don't like? I've read that's bad. How do I know what does or does not work before I try moving them then?
Is the migrate function incremental/customizable or global?

You can see I've confused on this, LOL.

Hi

Best solution scenario is just to migrate all your data files, found inside your User's folder, and anyway else you have stored your data. i.e. stuff like your music, photos etc.

When you say apps with key codes I assume they are commercial activation codes? Check whether there is a new Universal version for these apps, your key codes may still work in some or most of them. Some other apps may require you to upgrade to Intel-compatible, that is, Universal version - that is the "keyword" you need to watch out for.

Do not copy over the apps! Fresh install them on your new Intel mac, so are the preference, system files etc, DON'T copy them over, these you can start and set up afresh.

Hope this help

Cheers

That's kind of what I was afraid of - I have a lot of stuff that is Uni, and maybe some that isn't... it's resurrecting/finding some of those activation codes that might be an issue. If I have to purchase too many applications that run on Intel all over again (because I can't find the codes), that would not be fun.

At that point is almost would make sense to simply add a Mini (for instance) to gain the Intel box, and network the two together to keep the best of both worlds...
