Importing Video from IPhoto - audio not working

I have been able to move video with audio from my digital camera to iphoto. Once I attempt to move the video from iphoto to imovie to edit, the video will import but will lose the audio. Why can i only head the audio when playing the video in iphoto (quicktime) and not in imovie. Any help and advice you can give would be excellent. Thanks!

If you are using a Sony CyberShot digital camera, for instance, the MPEG-1 video would be plyback only as far as QT is concerned. Attempts to conver/import this type of file use QT would drop the audio. Use a third-party, MPEG-based converter application like MPEG Streamclip here before import.

Must I use some type of converter to get audio? I REALLY, REALLY, hope not.
Depends on the compression format and whether or not you actually want the audio. Multiplexed compression formats like MPEG-1 which contains blocks of video data interspersed with blocks of audio data to provide spatial synchronization are "playback only" supported by the QT "engine" which is designed for the parallel processing of separate audio and video tracks which are synchronized temporally. If you wish to retain your audio, you must use an MPEG-based, third-party converter like MPEG Streamclip here. If you files are multiplexed MPEG-2 file types (MPEG, VOB, etc.) then you would additionally need the QT MpeG-2 Playback component ($20) to be installed to use converters like MPEG Streamclip or MPEG2 Works.
