Contacts are NOT backed up, nor are songs, videos, podcasts or other items in your iTunes library. There is NO need for a backup as the original data is already in the computer, be it in the address book or iTunes.

Your mistake in this case was not to SYNC your data before you upgraded. SYNCing would have merged your contact information into the address book program. In the process of updating, your phone is wiped clean. If you didn't SYNC that contact information, it's gone forever.

all the music, text messages, videos all returned intact to the phone, the contacts did not.

Your contacts are backed up to the contact management program(i.e address book, outlook, etc) on your computer every time you sync.

I understand your point that the contacts sync, but when itunes does a backup it states that your media will be wiped out, but that your contacts, calendar ... will be backed up. If the point your are making is true, then it should state that "if" you did a sync first, "then" your contact, calendar ... is safe and backed up. I had to do a update on a computer other than mine as it has motherboard issues and all of my contacts are wiped out. Any help?
