Printing through Synology DS-101 -> nothing happens

Hi,
I am a new Mac-user, so I am kinda blank in regards to printerhandling on a Mac.

I've been using a Synology DS-101 with an attached Brother HL-1430 USB-printer in a Windows workgroup for years without any trouble. The Synology is connected to a Zyxel (with wireless capabilities) router with Ethernet-cable. I can print wireless using different Windows-laptops - I can print with my Windows-PC connected to the router with Ethernet-cable, but when I try to print (wireless) through this setup with my brand-spanking-new iMac nothing will happen.
Synology has a 'guide' for setting up printing with a Mac - but it does not seem to work. I do not know anything about how AppleTalk works - on the Synology it shows <no zones configured> and on the Mac all AppleTalk options are greyed out. I've tried to choose LPD/LPR printing as mentioned in the guide - correct IP, queue name and Generic driver assigned - but the printer will not print. The queue on the Mac shows 'Stopped'...
I've also tried to use the Brother 1430 CUPS print-driver - when using that the Mac-queue shows some spooling progress and the job disappears - but no paper is leaving the printer...
Frankly I do not know what to look for - so any input would be appreciated...

Generic driver on OS X almost always means postscript driver - but your printer isn't a postscript printer. Stick with the CUPS driver. The fact that LPD with correct queue name doesn't work makes me think you have an OS X install problem.

To use appletalk, you need appletalk ON in Network prefs - is it?
I don't have the synology manual - does it mention port 9100 printing? That's the same as HP Jetdirect protocol on OS X.

Experiment a little more and let us know, please.

Thanks for the tip regarding CUPS/Generic driver vs. non-postscript printer. It did not do the trick alone though and I've still got some work to do to get this working.

AppleTalk is on in Network prefs - but no zones are showing - and I do not know if this is perfectly normal behavior or if there should be something there. I've tried to use the HP Jetdirect protocol and it issues a completely different error - which I think I've seen somewhere else in this forum...

"Networkhost [IP] is in use; trying again in XX seconds..."

I think this maybe has to do with some missing usercredentials to do - but can one set credentials on a printerproperty somewhere?

AppleTalk is only active on the AirPort connection (which is the only one this Mac is using).

I've tried something entirely different - as I found out that I could connect to the printer as a 'Windows-printer'.

When trying to connect to the 'Windows-printer' (usbprinter) it asks for user-credentials - if I choose 'guest' without a password (default value) this is what the Mac-errorlog shows:

I [06/Sep/2008:00:03:59 +0200] [Job 36] Adding start banner page "none".

...and the Diskstation clearly 'sees' the entering as this shows in the log there:

2008/09/06 00:03:32 guest Windows client [guest] from [MAC0022412D96A5(IP:10.0.0.7)] accessed the shared folder [usbprinter].

...but no document (Mac-testpage) is leaving the printer (using CUPS driver for HL-1430)

Trying to print another testpage using a registered user on the Diskstation, the log instead shows this on the Mac:

I [06/Sep/2008:00:10:18 +0200] [Job 37] Adding start banner page "none".

...and the log on the Diskstation:

2008/09/06 00:09:50 "User" Windows client ["User"] from [MAC0022412D96A5(IP:10.0.0.7)] accessed the shared folder [usbprinter].

...still nothing from the printer...

Finally - when trying to print a Word-document with one simple text-string, it seems that I cannot use the 'guest'-account (the credential request keeps popping up), I cannot use the registrered user from before (same request), the credential-request first stops when I add user-credentials from another Diskstation-registered user - as this Mac-log shows:

Log from the Diskstation:

2008/09/06 00:13:37 "Another user" Windows client ["Another user"] from [MAC0022412D96A5(IP:10.0.0.7)] accessed the shared folder [usbprinter].

...still nothing from the printer...

Now - it would of course had been nice if one could see what happens with this printjob on the Diskstation - as it seems that the job is somehow entering the queue. Not a page has left the printer trying from this Mac-computer and I can print without any trouble from Windows-PCs on the same network (both wireless as well as wired).

Anyone got a hint of what to look for to solve this (or can one just conclude that this printer is no-good using a Mac)?

Hmm...strange things DO happen...

In the end I solved this myself. It seems that the Diskstation is indeed capable of Mac-use (explained further below).

I tried to use one of Windows-PCs to check that it actually could print (now) - and it could not! Checking the queue showed unfinished printjobs queuing on the Diskstation (my wife had tried to print - and could not). Cancelled the unfinished jobs - checking printersettings on the PC. Printing testpage from PC.

Going back to my Mac I tried to print a testpage again (as LPD - Generic) - now all of a sudden the printer is spitting blank pages out (5 pages). Progress...

Deleting the printer (LPD - Generic) from my Mac and setting up a new LPD - using HL-1430 CUPS drivers instead - finally made the printer able to print a testpage from the Mac. Word prints fine from the Mac too... 😀

What puzzles me a bit is, that I've tried to cleanup spool space from the Diskstations webinterface (from the Mac) - but apparently there was still some unfinished printjobs cropping up on the Diskstation (from the PC)?? First after deleting these queued documents from the PC - and being able to print a testpage from the PC - it was now possible to print from the Mac?

Nevertheless - it works now and I am a happy man. I would like to say that printing was not possible using Generic Postscript Driver - but it was indeed possible with the HL-1430 CUPS driver. Maybe Synology should look into this and correct the helpfile?

I succeeded in printing on my AC-C1100 through the Synology server with OSX.

Log in to cups via the browser using http://localhost:631 on the Mac.
Choose add printer, give the printer a name and location, choose Windows printer via Samba, and as device url use: smb://[user]:[password]@[ip-adress]/usbprinter.

User and password being valid credentials for the Synology device. I used my admin account for this, with the corresponding password.

(I prior installed the latest Epson printer drivers (ver. 4.0), but I don't know if this is necessary)
