I ripped Disc 1 of the Eagles Farewell Tour I from Australia last night. The transfer everything seemed to go perfectly as usual. The one thing I did do was change the audio settings to what I thought would improve audio quality since it is a concert DVD. I increased the sample rate to the next higher over the 44,100 & left the bitrate at 160. I was listening to this disc on my vPod at work this morning & there was a noticeable, what I would have to describe as a warble, in the audio playback. Audio basically sounded like garbage. I deleted the file & am re-ripping tonight with the sample rate back to 44,100, bitrate still at 160 The rip is still in progress so I don't know if there's been any improvement. Does anyone have any other ideas? The audio on the feature films that I've ripped @160 & 44.1 has been fine.

I have had the same results as you when trying to increase the audio bitrate in Handbrake. I have only been successful at 44.1, even though I would DEARLY love to improve it when possible. For now, I'm ripping only non-music dvds until I can find a better solution. Live8 DVD and the U2 live from chicago DVD are due out here in a week or so, so I am desperate to get a solution.

Will do, David. Thanks for the heads up on the U2 DVD, huge fan here, & I didn't know about it.

Assume you used the H.264 codec here. Have you tried MPEG4 at 48kHz and 160kbps?
November 14 is the release date for the U2 two-disc concert DVD. It was recorded May 9 and 10 in Chicago. Can't wait to see it!
Jon, I did use the MPEG4 at 48 & 160kbps, that's what "warbled". Everything I've done on MPEG4 has looked great, so I haven't bothered with the H.264.

Thanks for the update, Debbie. Was hoping MPEG4 with greater "headroom" might not have this problem if your file was H.264 encoded. What about volume, treble, and base setting? Do adjustments help at all? Concert audio may be "over-biased" in this instance for the default audio settings.
Jon, I made no change on those, mostly because I wouldn't know what to change them to. I'm willing to try any suggestions as I'm a real novice at this part of the vPod.

Have to ask...do you have the lastest rev of Handbrake? I know they released one on 11/04 that includes some bug fixes in audio support, but I do NOT know if it is related to any of these issues as i haven't tested them yet...just curious which rev you're on.

If you have QT Pro, load the problem file into the QT Player, open the "Show Movie Properties" window, select the audio track in the upper section of the window, open the "Audio Settings" tab in the lower section of the window, and try adjusting volume, treble, and bass settings. If there is any improvement and you wish to embed the new settings, simply save the file as a "self-contained" file. Extension with change to ".mov" but format, data rate, etc. remains unchanged. Please let us know the results in any case.
Jon & David, in answer to both your responses, I don't have QT Pro, but if this is a possible fix, I might be willing to invest in it. I have several concert DVD's that I would like to put on the vPod, a good picture is important, but good sound is the priority. In regards to the HandBrake update, I downloaded something this weekend that I think is the update. I was using 0.7.0-beta3, downloaded 0.7.0 & ripped the Eagles concert with the 0.7.0 only (no beta).
You have the latest version then. I was secretly hoping you didn't...

While I consider QT Pro a worthwhile investment if you use it on a regular basis, I hesitate to recommend it for this one lone possible use. Is there a MUG in your area? If so, am sure it would be easy to find a member willing to test your clip to see if these simple adjustments would be worth the investment.
Hi, Jon. I dl QT Pro this afternoon & have been tinkering with the audio settings with some success, but not enough. I dropped the volume be 50%, increased the base by about 50%, & dropped the treble by about 25%. I can still hear this "warble" some on the Mac speakers, but I don't think it's as bad. It may be more distinct on the iPod as I have some upper end earphones. I will check that out & let you know. If you have any suggestions about setting adjustments, I'm open.

No, believe you've tried what I would have done. Assumed "concert" recordings would be somewhat "over-driven." Only real question is how does the target file compare with source file? Only other thing I can think of would be to extract a copy of the audio track and run it through Peak's Soundsoap component routines to normalize, reduce possible clipping, and eliminate any remaining "objectionables." No experience in this area. The software has been sitting in my applications folder unopened since being installed from the FCP discs to the G5.
Well, Jon, I wish I could say the audio repair helped but it wasn't that much. I listened to the repaired file on the iPod this morning, I won't deny it's better, but it's still really not acceptable, the "warble" is definitely still detectable.
