Exploding Batteries!

I have now had two batteries "explode" for my 17" MacBook Pro. The first one happened inside a cabinet, not even connected. The second one was in the computer. The packs inside the battery seem to just rapidly expand and pop open the battery case. Nothing leaked out of them, but obviously, I am concerned about any risks (fire, acid, etc.). I also am a little worried that I spent extra money for an extra battery, and now both have exploded. Has anyone else had this problem? Will Apple replace the battery?

I had the same problem.....battery exploded while mounted to my 17" mac book pro today October 26, 2008. And it is not the same as my house catching on fire either.....seems that many of us would like to know if this is a common problem occurring and if apple is aware of it and taking care of the issue. as for searches on this subject--it does happen more often than one would think--just look at all of the battery exploding related posts.

Called apple today Sunday October 26th.

They told me my macbook pro was out of date: it was purchased i think August 2006 and that I had to BUY a new replacement battery.

HOWEVER, i was not happy with that answer and asked to speak directly to the "PRODUCT SPECIALIST" and told them how dissapointed i was that apple did not replace batteries that seem OBVIOUS to bee defective if they just up and explode on you. There is no fault of the user of these batteries...it seems to be a defective engineering problem. I also reminded them that they had a battery recall for the 15" macbook pro and after doing a search via their very own support page that there are NUMEROUS others with the same problem and using 17" macbook pros.

FINALLY, they agreed to send me a new battery. This has now restored a bit of faith in me about apple taking some responsibility and not just dumping it on us the consumer. I THINK THIS IS VERY RARE TO SEE THESE DAYS, but for whatever reason they did replace my battery even though it is coming on two years since i purchased the computer. I think having reminded them that this is more of a product safety issue helped with the whole episode.

Good Luck to any others with this problem. BUT CALL APPLE FIRST BEFORE SPENDING $129 FOR ANOTHER BATTERY.
