Movie capture stutters on my IMAC

When I import a movie from my DV Camera onto my IMac there are arbitrary "breaks" and stutters in the moving causing 2-5 seconds at a time to be skipped. I have a movie of my Dad's suprise birthday party. It looks fine on the camera playback but when I imported it from the Camera it skips the part when my Dad gets suprised. It does it quite a bit in the 40 minute long movie. I have other apps running while I am doing the improting (Mail, Itunes etc). Can anyone help out and help me figure out what may be the cause?

IMAC G5, Mac OS X (10.4.4), Not intel

Try it with no other background processes.

You're on a older machine using Tiger. You have limited RAM. This will affect the playback.

Another options is to try in iMovie 6 HD. It has lower overhead and a better track record.
