zcover review for ipods...

I had one of these http://www.zcover.com/zCoverProduct_iPod_G5Original.htm

my wife and I used it on our respective photo ipods....worked wonderfully. Used it for 8 months..took it off to sell them and got new G5 Ipods. NOT ONE SCRATCH...i. The buyer was surprised they looked so good.

Thus...I would recommend for the G5 Ipods...we will be ordering.

Thanks Chuck

I'm a first time iPod owner. Been following the various case discussions with avid interest. Decided to order the ZCover earlier today as being the best choice of an "easy to fit," thin-skin cover for a dexterous challenged, "ham-fisted" individual such as myself in search of a conservative look which preserves the "classic" color and style of my iPod.

Mine was shipped on the 8th (a day earlier than expected). Unfortunately, it took a day to make the trip from Richmond, BC, clear the "import" people in Seattle, WA, and finally begin its journey across the US to the Phili area. Assume it will likely have to pass through 3-4 major hubs and I will lose tracking over the weekend. Expected delivery is currently NTL next Wednesday.

Mine arrived today zCover ISA for thre 60GB 5G iPod.

Pros: It fits well. The belt clip is removable. It covers the bottom port with a little flip up cover which is good. It has grips on the side. The screen protection isn't bad.

Negative: It collects dust like a magnet. When I took the belt clip off, one of the holes ripped open a bit.

The screen cover came with a thousand small scratches on it which look not quite as bad as my iCleaner micro-scratched screen did. In practice, though, it isn't that noticable. But in direct light, it makes the screen look doubly scratched up. This is a 1 week old iPod mind you. Can't they build these things a -little- more scratch resistant? ****, my PSP does a lot better.

But I digress.

So far, so fair basically on the case... until you get to the click wheel. What a mess.

This case makes the click wheel nearly unusable. The "ultra thin" cover is not nearly as thin as it seems. They helpfully pressed in the menu, play, etc symbols on it where the wheel is. The problem is every time you pass over these bumps the signal to the wheel is lost. This becomes a huge problem when scrolling through long lists - the scrolling never really gets up to "speed" because every time you pass over an imprint the wheel thinks you stopped. So scrolling through long lists is a difficult.

[Edit: after some initial use, the scroll whel surface got a bit smoother, which helped. Also, too much fast scrolling seems to slow the iPod down, not speed it up. One consistent speed is the best way to "speed up" as the iPod senses what you are doing after a few revolutions and speed up automatically.

Add scrolling when -anything- is playing, and it will be signifcantly slower as well.

The case just makes all of these operations noticeably, in some cases, very badly, less-responsive.]

Don't get me wrong... the scrolling -does- work. You just can't ever scroll with increasing speed through any list ever again. Ever.

I used to have an Agent 18 case with a clear sticky wheel protector. In the end, this is probably what I will buy. This case will be fine for now, but it is overall an overpriced case that makes your ipod look worse and perform worse.

Hi Chuck - You mentioned cutting the zcover to fit in your docking system. I just got my zcover and it is great. However I use the JBL on stage speaker at work and I found today that I was not able to have my ipod sit in there with the cover on. I'd rather not have to take it on and off - a bit of a nuisance and afraid it will scratch rubbing the screen protector on and off like that.

You mentioned cutting slits in it on the sides and back so you can "flip it up". What sort of slits did you make, does it still protect it enough? Could you further explain? I don't want to try and then destroy my cover.

Thanks for your help!
