"Unimplemented Trap" booting OS9 install CD

Can I please ask for your assistance in troubleshooting this problem.
I have a 400MHz G4 PowerMac (Gigabit Ethernet, I believe) on which I
wish to install OS9. I have a retail version of the OS (white CD with
gold 9 logo and marked Z691-2386-A). When I boot from the CD I get an
"Unimplemented Trap" error.
I have tried booting without extensions, zapping the PRAM, resetting Open
Firmware, even resetting the PMU. All to no avail.
I can put another HDD in with OS 10.4 on it and it will boot fine from
that disk. But I have taken that out and am trying to install OS9 on
another disk, so I can upgrade the firmware on this machine.
Any troubleshooting advice appreciated.

Look at this link. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=31276 Although you have done most of the fixes.

In you System Profiler, check your hard drive info to see if OS 9 drivers are installed. You don't need the drivers to install OS 9, but you will need the drivers if you want to boot to OS 9 to install the firmware.

You can install OS 9 on the OS 10.4 hard drive without affecting anything associated with OS X. And, if the drivers are installed on that hard drive, you can boot OS 9 from the 10.4 hard drive.

Hi, arawata -

I have a retail version of the OS (white CD with gold 9 logo and marked Z691-2386-A).

The " 2386" of that CD's part number indicates it is an OS 9.0 Install CD; it is not sufficient for a G4 Gigabit Ethernet model.

The Gigabit Ethernet models shipped with OS 9.0.4, and that is the minimum version such can use. I'm not sure that those models can even use a retail OS 9.0.4 Install CD - Apple KBase Article #HT1835 indicates that may be the case.

If you do not have the original Software Install CD that came with the machine, then look for a retail OS 9.1 (" 2746") or retail OS 9.2.1 (" 3334") Install CD - either of those should work fine.
