setting up NIS client and NFS mounts

I am coming from the Linux world and just bought a Mac. I need it to authenticate via NIS and then mount an NFS directory from my file server.

On my Ubuntu box I just configured the nsswitch.conf file and installed ypbind to bind to the NIS domain. Then I made an entry in fstab to mount my remote directories.

In the Mac BSD world, this doesn't seem to be the case.

Can anyone help me with this?

Any suggestions are very much appreciated.

Thanks.

So I tried a couple of different things with NFS.

I tried creating my fstab file. But when I did a mount -a as root, I got "Operation not permitted"

I also tried going into the directory utility under Applications. I added my NFS mounts and they seem to mount ok, but when I try to save to it I get a permissions error. As Advanced Mount Parameters I added "rw, nosuid" but still no dice. I can only save to them as root.

Any suggestions? Any other parameters I need?
Thanks!

I needed to change the uid (actually I created a new user of the same username at work with a matching uid) to mount certain NFS volumes through a VPN. It was interesting.

If I recall correctly the "operation not permitted" errors occur when trying to write to mount points used for the NFS volumes by one of the other local accounts (including admin/root).

I ended up not using it, because everything's behaving just fine with a separate Firefox for doing work and judicious use of SSH and the like. All the work systems were using Solaris too.
