iBook won't boot after 10.4.11 update

Booted G4 iBook after not using for several weeks. Ran Software Update, but Microsoft's ($*&% automatic Office update ran, so I installed that first. Then installed several Apple software updates (QuickTime, iWeb, ... 10.4.11 security).
Restart failed - grey screen with apple and the circle "clock", then blue screen with cursor in upper left corner, every minute or so, the circle clock appears briefly, eventually blank blue screen.
Booted from install disk - ran disk utility - no errors found ("repairs made").
Ran terminal - directories seem normal - tried to boot from there - repeated crashes crash file written to ../Library/Logs/CrashRegister/Loginwindow.crash.log
HELP!

Hi Chuper2, and a warm welcome to the forums! 🙂

Could be many things, we should start with this, here's the scoop...

The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.

Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.

If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!

If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.

May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD...

I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...

http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/

That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.

Appears to be time for An Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space...

Hi,

The exact same thing happened to me. I hadn't used my ibook for some days and then i turned it on and dunno why i did the stupid updates, which i rarely do. Then when it rebooted automatically, the process stops in the blue screen with the mouse cursor on the top left. I have tried everything in pretty much every forum with no success. Everything except reinstalling and archiving, since i don't have the 10.4 disc, since my computer came with the 10.3 and dunno what kind of greater crash might happen because of all the new applications designed for 10.4.

And this is the 2nd time this happens. The first time the HDD was totally messed up (late 2005) that i had to get a new one. Not even recovery or target mode was possible.

So if you have solved your problem, would be great to know what you did!

cheers,

Alf.

"...Everything except reinstalling and archiving, since i don't have the 10.4 disc, since my computer came with the 10.3"

Then how did you install 10.4 to begin with if you don't have a Tiger installer disk? Not having the disk you could not have tried everything mentioned, like Repair Disk for instance. It might be more in your best interest to start a new topic with your issue and secure a retail version of Tiger 10.4 so you can repair your disk.

Dear Sig,

Thanks for showing interest in my retail disk acquisition operation,as well as what "might be in my best interest" but in the last couple of years I've moved in 3 different countries and it's hard to not loose stuff along the way. Thankfully the original 10.3 disks were at my parents exactly where I left them when finishing my Uni years. I have tried Terminal Repair disk but the outcome says it's fine, and i've tried it five times. I noticed that with your response there was no other comment to help out. So I'll remake my main question "can I try the Repair Disk and Reinstall and Archive with 10.3?". And I will mention again that this happened Not after updating from 10.4.8 to 10.4.11 But after installing the SECURITY UPDATE, and apparently this has happend to other users as well.

So Sig, or anyone else with similar problems, any recommendations/suggestions or concerns about what I should do?

Thanks!
