display anomalies

Hi ren,

Can you give me any details about the Board you got. is it a different but compatible one? I am trying to do so since some moth but i am always searching for a direct replacement for my one and they are very expensive and rare.

It's the same exact board as my old one - 2GHz.

I was experiencing the EXACT same problem until last week when I decided to crack my MBP open and found a large piece of Kaptop tape blocking the exhaust grid and right fan filter.

Cutting the portion of the tape blocking the exhaust grid and fan filter solved all of my problems: The heat issues and the graphical anomalies.

I hope this helps all those who own Core Duo's MBP 1.1... Faulty manufacturing should be Apple's responsibility, not ours. Like I said on the thread about my experience: We did not pay over US$ 2000 for an "elite" product assembled so poorly.

ok.. just for little explaintation.. i dont think that we all have problem like you.. maybe few people..

this is known issue since very first days of MacBook Pro CoreDuo.. Apple use LOT of thermal paste between procesors and coolers.. lot of people change that thermal paste at the begin and they put there proper amount and what happend? processors temnperatures were from 10 to 15 degrees lower.. so everybody who didnt change their paste had higher temperatures.. and time was running.. so that termal paste under the thumb of high temperature is demaged and it didnt abduse heat from procesors good enought.. if i remeber good i saw somewhere article about our problem where user change thermal paste and temperatures was lower and he didnt saw this display anomalies anymore.. or maybe sometimes.. but only when mac was realy hot(dont remember good)

but i dont think that everybody have skills to change thermal paste.. iam going to switch it this week so ill make few photos and ill post them here than..

i had my mbp opened few times.. i changed my HDD and wifi.. so if there was covered fan i will notice that.. but there isnt.. in my case..

i dont think that apple will do something about this.. it is too late for doing something(NVIDIA versions are newer than ATI).. lot of our machines are more than 2years old.. so out of waranty and nobody know how many service parts they have.. i think that this happend in at least 75% of sold MBP CD.. because it is because of the way how they made it.. so if they will go official they will lost lot of money on repairing and giving money back.. so what now? we are doomed :-D

yes.. we can fix it by ourself or we can pay for it.. like ren* did.. they change his logic board (but new is in my opinion too expensive.. if i compare it against new mac) and they use proper amout of thermal paste..

i now have up to 10 crashes a day. i switched back to windows now, must work, cannot boot all day long 😟. i will really miss that OSX! but i am still searching for a solution:

a) get replacement board below 400 € from anywhere
b) get replacement board from apple for free, or fair value

try to use smcFanControl.. and turn on your fan at least 3500 or 4500 rpm.. and do anything what you can to keep your mack cooled down.. and buy cooling dock if you can..

Good luck with that iluzone2. I think mine's come to the point where max fan settings wouldn't solve the issue.

ofcourse it didnt solve the issue.. it just reduce number of restarts :-P

Wow, this is poor, ive been sold a so called Pro machine that has obviously not been professionally tested enough or in some cases assembled. I am a professional, i dont expect the equipment i buy to fail due to bad design, if it is proven that thermal paste or whatever is causing the problem that is a design flaw and Apple should bloody well fix it at no cost.

I mean i had a Sony TV that had a design flaw in the power button. Id had it five years and they gave me a new TV after it was shown that the design flaw ran across the whole range of TV's. Five years apple, five years, no warranty, nothing. Why cant you do the same when the products 'you' design and build fail.


Ive had a Dell laptop that ive really hammered and never had one problem. Only cost me £600, ive had it nearly 8 years. So why are apple so different? Its one thing paying above the norm for the design of a computer, but if some of that cost is also about the level of quality and computing power of the apple product then im sorry apple but your failing badly. A hardware failure like this shows complete lack of quality and as for computing power, not much use if you cant see what your doing.

yes a also reached the point where its crashing at 40° (wrote above, switched machines now) and there is no way to get i cooler than this (Fans at 4000-max RPM's). Thank god it's winter now, but what's about the summer. Also climate change wouldn't help us with that as it seems to be going.

as u wrote no guarantee that a replacement board is not affected, and sold without knowledge of that issue, or sold exactly for that reason
problem: our machine is worth nothing in this state and i am to fair to sell it to someone else for 850+ €

by the way, windows ain't that bad 🙂 doesn't look so cute :/ but does the same job 🙂

when you partition the hard drive and run windows does the computer still crash?

dunno because i stopped using the machine, but i saw a ATI card behaving like ours on MACOSX running at a windows PC-System. It's definitively a hardware GPU error. All the people having apple care here, got replaced the LogicBoard and, well done error fixed.

Ok thats fine, i have no argument with the solution to the problem, but when the error is being caused by bad design/manufacturing then why should we have to pay the full cost of replacing the logic board, i think there are enough cases to show that this is not a problem caused by any user fault, but a problem caused by the manufacturer, whether it be an ATI issue (which as the same cards on PC's at 500mhz dont appear to be having issues).

We know the ATI cards are underclocked on Macs because of the heat issues. Why is a 'Pro' machine having heat issues? this is just bad design/testing pure and simple, its not an aging issue alone. At least aging is not the cause, we all know its a heating issue dont we????

is that not the concensus here?


I wouldn't mind if the cost was met halfway by apple, at least that then becomes a viable solution, for those if u who have run out of warranty, or apple protection. Also, especially when the machines are getting to be 3 years old now. I know my machine started showing these errors not long after my one year warranty ran out, but back then i just thought it was something and nothing, but as time has gone on its of course its getting worse.

Yes that exactly what i am trying to do here and anywhere else but:

- no response from Apple till yet.
- negative response from German apple Dealers: Gravis
- negative responses from people here not having apple care
- no single positive response found anywhere in the net

But you are right, this definitively isn't a user fault its a hardware-defect and they knew it from the beginning, as the under-clocked GPU shows. And lets remember, NVIDIA GPU's are replaced by apple without apple car.
