hello everyone,
ever since the last two os updates, i'm getting these weird anomalies quite frequently,
if i resize the window, they go away

i looked around, but no one seem to be having the similar problem,
my vga is ATI Radeon X1600

thanks in advance,

Add my MacBook Pro 2,1 with Snowy 10.6.8 to the list...

Noticed one line of pixels on one screen a couple days ago and then yesterday the MacBookPro locked up - I think in Safari. Checking the disk I found it needed repairs.... But more significantly after I repaired and backed up the disk and then restarted I found Kernel errors that started with...... ATIRadeon Graphics Card related error note.

Do we have a consensis if this is a Hardware or a Software problem? I think I hear expensive hardware problem but perhaps the answer is still unknown?

I don't think there is a consensus of a hardware problem. All the software tests on my machine suggest a software driver problem - normal AHT running for many hours in loop mode; normal behaviour on safeboot; normal now 12 months without ATIRadeonX1000.kext; very different thermal behavior of my machine with different OS kernels (10.5.8 vs 10.6.x).

I have no logs which suggest GPU heating has much to do with the problem. My temperature logs show GPU is always a lot cooler (10-20degC) than CPU and GPU temperature rises as the CPU heats up. High CPU temperature appears to be caused by kernel faults.

Repeated reboot (50-100) tests (when using the ATIRadeonX1000.kext) the single line desktop glitch is present on login show a cyclic behavior through abnormal patterns returning to normal suggesting a very local memory corruption (?single bit). Safari 5 still reliably crashes trying to view this page without ATIRadeonX1000.kext, which suggests tight software dependency of Safari.

It may be there is a GPU BGA solder joint failure, but I would like to see physical evidence of the hardware fault - eg microscope photo of the failed solder joint. If that is the cause, then it should be completely repairable wth a solder reflow. Speaking to someone last week who has done home reflows on other hardware with a suitable kit, but playing with a MOBO makes me nervous when my machine is quite functional.

Have WD Scorpio Black 320GB, no issues.

I am not sure Ian. The reason why there are no issues with the driver gone is simple. The video board is not being used technically. Instead the system is using a basic method for displaying. This is also why when disabled certain things are lost, like VLC or the ripple effect in dashboard.

But you are right in that there has be no solid proof of what the issue is. I will tell you this. I have had to once again heat up the mobo after getting artifacts and no usability out of the system. After doing so this weekend I have been watching shows in VLC and using the machine normally ever since. I did not purge the PRAM in any way other than disconnect the PRAM battery for a short while when heating the board (and removing it). Which now takes me about 15 minutes max. I did no clear any preferences, etc. Just removed the board, heated it up by concentrating on the GPU and putting it back in. If it was just a software issue, then I would suspect my issues would be back already. The system will probably chug along for a while until I get the case temps too high again. I killed it last time by installed Myth III and playing it for a couple hours.

    hello,

i have gray screen (stop) problem on startup ( ATI X1600 problem )

i booted in safemode and i deleted those files

and snow leopard osx works finally, but no more video playing vlc (quick time works slowly ) and no image preview .....

surely, I reinstalled osx and reset PRAM, EFI, SMC, but not working

    there are 3 solutions:

    1- install 10.5;10.6 or 10.7 deleting atiradeonx1000.kext

    2-install 10.4

    3.install windows 7

it's a harware-software related issue. with both windows 7 and tiger i have never had a crash (after cleaning the macbook pro and after changing the thermal paste).

with 10.5 i have randomly some crashes.

with 10.6 and 10.7 the macbook pro isn't usable. because these os use a lot the graphic card, making it hot, and so causing the system freeze.

there is nothing to do. i'm sorry

    here my solution.

    i installed 10.7.2 and windows 7 32bit.

in lion, i deleted ONLY atiradeonx1000.kext and here is the problem, with this kext. is there anyone who could work on it?

without this kext i can't use dvd player, i can't use vlc (but i can use quick time, and it works perfectly), i can't use photobooth (black screen but no problem for me), i can't use facetime (but skyper works perfectly) and preview works. even dashboard works.

i use windows 7 32 when i have to play videogame or when i have to make some powepoint presentations etc.

    please tell me your opinions!

(Sorry, ignore last post, I was editing it and the forum went out for maintenance in the middle of it, lost all my edits : ( starting again. Keep forgetting it is a good idea to copy/paste edits into another app prior to trying to submit so that one doesn'y have to retype the lot if there is a problem.)

Crashes in 10.5 may be caused by not clearing out all the system software corruption. See posts around here for recipe https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1697470?start=810

I can't see why people think GPU temps are the problem, since *all* my TemperatureMonitor logs show CPU temps 15-20deg higher than GPU. GPU heatsink is always hotter than GPU chip. Heat appears to flow from CPU to heatsink to GPU.

Torture test to failure - crash:

    /___sbsstatic___/migration-images/166/16641242-1.png

Glitches, reboots are gaps in log, then corruption on login window - note CPU temps substantially higher due to presumed kernel corruption:

    /___sbsstatic___/migration-images/166/16641242-2.png

Corruption, reboots during repair, then temps settle after last reboot: (can't remember when exactly the last reboot was - presume it was where the blue vertical line marks)

    /___sbsstatic___/migration-images/166/16641242-3.png

I am contemplating a home solder reflow, after I get a new computer (in the next few weeks), since I cannot afford to be computerless if it fails. I have read online about home oven and electric griddle reflows. Contemplating using a clothes iron +/- electric griddle.

But going to try changing the PRAM battery to a higher spec one first as an experiment. Note models after MBP 1,1 don't use a PRAM battery any more and the OEM spec battery has a starting voltage of 2.7V if I recall. The slightly larger one have bought is more than 3V and should have better thermal tolerance.

As mentioned a page or two back, I too have used a simple hair-dryer to temporarily fix mine. I have noticed that if I let temperatures climb the system generally fails until I reheat the board again. Last time I did so I posted it here. Not sure how long it had been again, about two weeks. The system operates fine until I get the urge to push the ATI chip too hard. Spore seems okay, but the last time I tried Myth.

Either way, I have not delted or modfied any software file. Only heating up the chip at this point. I suppose one of these times I will have heated it enough to no longer be an issue. But in my case, this is working for me. For others it may not.
