Q: display anomalies

Referring to my problem, I went to an Apple Store and they told me that I damaged the display and that Apple will not take care of it, unless of course I pay €600,00 to have my display replaced! Sincerely...I don't know how that kind of "white stain" can possibly be a damage I made! The display is not scrathed or something!

I already sent my complaint the other day but this may be a good idea. I haven't received any sort of response yet. I am hoping we get some word from Apple about this soon. My screen problems have been getting worse, with lockups more often.

If Apple does not give us any official word, or continues to ignore this problem then it may become a good idea to contact some tech or consumer blogs to spread the awareness.

guys guys..guess what? mine used to freeze NORMALLY; now it is freezing with screen covered with vertical green/black lines or just different weird colors (this all happens unexpectedly and instantly). But wait! sometimes it whites out too! So yeah..just posting this to share with everyone that it GETS A LOT WORSE!!

I have since ca. two months these horizontal lines and freezing of the whole system. My MacBook Pro is not reliable anymore and it is very frustrating to work with a professional system, bought in July 2006 for € 2.789,- via the Apple Store. Freezing of the whole system is of course the worst problem!!

I'm an Apple user for years and always have been a satisfied user however the problems I,m facing now with my MBP are not acceptable, and therefore Apple needs to solve it. It cannot be the case that an expensive system of 2.5 years old is not working correctly.

I've come back from the Apple Store following a logic board replacement. Aside from the awkwardness of not being able to reproduce it instore earlier, one of the staff was able to replicate it intermittently — but it was proof enough.

Now to test my MacBook Pro and see if the problems show up again.

sent a feedback to apple, its starts to feel like we're just shooting in the dark here though.

has anyone had any luck getting an out of warranty replacement for this?

I have started the usual dealings with 1-800-SOS-APPL. The key here is be upfront with the reps. Describe the anomalies. Remain calm. Request an RMA box. If you are knowledgeable make them aware of it, but do NOT be condescending. Its sort of a lottery but most of the time you can find someone who is willing to help you. If it doesn't work out the first time, start over with another service rep. At this point, no one at SOS APPLE claims to be aware of this particular issue. So call today, and we might be on our way. I'll post later when I hear back from them early this week.

An update on my situation - my computer has been to the apple store, I've called apple, and I wrote a letter to their headquarters. Got a reply back about the letter - basically a f-you reply - "sorry for your problems, nothing we can do". The apple store was totally clueless, as was the apple phone rep. The apple store guy DID say that leopard may make the computer run hotter, since I never had any problems before installing it.

So now I have that smcfancontrol installed. It seems to be helping some, it's not freezing as much, but when I watch videos on my computer it can go up to around 177F and thats when it seems to freeze. And obviously, can't keep the fans running high all the time.

I too was happy to know that I am not crazy, and my MBP is actually not working because of a real problem. I have Green Dots all over the screen, horizontal lines, screen blank outs and of course crashes. It happens more and more and get worse as time goes by, the problem is that even tho I can't really afford to fix it, if I do fix it, will it just do the same thing because they replace it with the same product????

I have spent hours on-line trying to find a solution, redo this, speed up fan, get a cooling unit.... blah blah blah. I have a cooling base, that i bought about a month after getting the computer, I have smc fan control, It seems to slow down the rate at which the computer turns to garbage, and is ended with a 15" paper weight, but it doesn't stop it.

I built my last computer, ordered all the parts and assembled it, it lasted me 7 years. Now, I prefer the Mac OS way more than windows, but the hardware is a serious issue. I can probably change the windows programming and make it work for me, but i cannot fix broken electronics. So the question is should we all just get a $600 PC and forget about mac? The problem is that I have alot of Mac things, a 24" monitor, wireless keyboard, mouse, etc.

I don't care if I have to pay to get my computer fixed, I have used it, and the warranty is up. What I do want is that if this is all apple problem, is a fair price for replacement parts, as well as a reassurance that when the problem is fixed that will not happen again.

If my computer has parts that wear out because they are old and whatever, so be it ,but after 1.5 years my $2400 computer should not be completely ruined and worthless, and cost as much as a newer better computer to fix.

I bought this in 2006 October, and have been having issues for around 8 months or more......
I wonder if we should all go pester ATI and see if they can find a solution.

Ok I just read the whole posting in one sitting, and i'm tired and ****** because i still have no answers. I hope some one can actually find a real solution that is affordable.

It is a pity that Apple deletes the more polite critical posts. So far, reading all the posts I have learned that the only solution to solve these problems is the replacement of the system board.

I believe everything has been said and adressed in this topic and additional comments will not add any value.

Yes apparently your not allowed to post anything that points to a petition or otherwise that is harmful to apples image, yet apple are allowed to sell us dodgy produkts that they know will fail and harm our wallets.

Id say it was worth following the ATI route, there are plenty of posts out there pointing to ATI Radeon x1600s producing alot of heat and not operating at high temperatures. They also dont like interlaced video.......a great card to pic then for a Pro users machine.

Good!!!! Macfixit has picked it up!!!! I thought they dismissed my mail. I'll try again with apple insider. Anyone else has a suggestion of other sites this could be reported to? Apple is looking the other way. Let´s make some noise and see if they honor the reputation they publicize.

Maybe, as apple are trying to convert PC users to Mac that is where we can hit them hardest in getting apple to pay attention to its EXISTING users sighs

I also wrote to ATI pointing to this thread and raising the issue of heat on ATI x1600 cards, but it got kicked back to me as i wasnt a registered ATI/AMD member, but i will try again when i get a minute.


I think we all now must own the most expensive ipod known on the planet as thats about all my MBP can now do!!!! LOL
