bummer! mine always froze up before it got that bad...
otherwise - 3 hours of streaming video later and i never got above 60 °C!!! no freezes, no display artifacts at all! playback was a bit choppy but that's probably my internet connection... tried VLC and sure enough it crashes... Quicktime Player works like a charm tho with no noticeable differences. one thing that's odd is that my Glims extension for Safari didn't load... strange that. i'm going to go and see how some of the other stuff functions now... what exactly am i losing by disabling this?
thanks a lot for reminding me about this tip - it really helps.
just as a side note - i disabled Fan Control but not Coolbook - but i notice that my fan speeds still don't ever go below ~2400 rpm, do i have to reset the SMC manager or something? are my last settings with Fan Control still the default even tho i moved the Pref Pane into a 'disabled' folder?
i guess i can find out for myself but just wondering if you know the answer!
    cheers again for this.

Well got to tell ya, today I am using my Macbook Pro and during my install of Bootcamp along with windows, I notice that SMC was not running. So when I tried to boot back into OS X the machine kept freezing because SMC was not running. What a Joke, is the only phrase I came come up with at this moment. So during the freeze, I noticed that the fans were still running at the setting I used in SMC to make the machine run cooler, so I let it stand for a minute while it cooled the machine down and upon reboot it worked like a charm. For anybody to say that it is a software issue is a laugh, unless it is something different than what we are experiencing.

I am a long time Mac user and love this machine for the most part. I want to use it and will be scheduling an appointment with one of the Mac Geniuses to help me find resolve hopefully. I will be posting my results and hope for success. Ohh well at least it is working for now and I am using it to type this post.

I got a question, my MPB is now doing glitches and stuff below 50 celsius, any one got any ideas? I'm kinda outta work and really can't afford a new computer now. Also because of this problem, it got up to about 32-33 celsius outside this past week and I couldn't even turn my computer on without it glitching within 30 seconds. I have a fan under it, I have SMC installed.... I don't know what to do next. I know i'm ranting, but i'm tired of this and I need help.

Please apple help us.... we all own ipods/iphones/macs/macbooks/etc...
I don't want handouts, just reasonable repair cost... or a discount on a new machine

    DHD_03, i sympathize.
suggestions are to use Chris Zumbrunn's terminal script to disable quartz extreme (see above), and all of the stuff i listed in my very long post above... let us know if any of that helps. i too want Apple to come across with an offer of some kind, but in the meantime - well computer gods help those who help themselves.
    good luck,
    b

I still get artifacts after disabling quartz extreme. I used to run Fan Control, and ive swapped between Fan Control and SMCFanControl. I find Fan Control better. I also installed that coolbook app, and now switch off the machine whenever i can. I notice so far less artifacts, but i still get them. I have not upgraded to Leopard, (still on Tiger) but i have not hammered the machine as im just scared of completely killing it. Its just an expensive iPod until Apple address the issue, or i find the money from somewhere to either get it fixed or hesitantly buy a new laptop........question is will i even consider another apple laptop????

If i heard a positive response from Apple then i would consider buying another laptop, but when they say nothing about it, and pretend the problem doesnt exist, then i have have to question Apples business ethics.

Did they say what the problem was?
My AASP said that I had bad power supply to the logic board.
Was your fault selfmade or fabricatmade?

Just wanted to add my name to the list..

x1600 MBP 17" (2.5 years old) It seems that 2.5 years is the limit with these ones!

Vertical Lines & strange GPU lockups.

More persistant vertical lines and more lockups.

General glitching around updates to OS X windows from time to time.
    Vertical line gone, strangely.
    Lots of GPU lock ups.

    Today..
Intermittent glitches on standard OS X windows even running under light load these days.

I am well out of warranty so will be trying a thermal paste and fan cleaning session this weekend.

It's a shame that Apple does not even offer a low cost option to replace the logic board or fix these issues.

guys thanks for the suggestions, but I run VLC and I run a bunch other things that need the 3d acceleration. If not for using these things, I would barely even use my computer. I just wanna figure out how to cool off my computer, but i guess I could stick it in the fridge with a monitor cable hanging out.... maybe that would work. LOL.... whatever.

I think we should show apple our support, and go build our own Mac compatible with efix, for a third of the price. Although I cannot afford that now, that may be my next solution.

After spending $4000 in one year on my mac computer monitor and other components I would expect that I could get some help. But with that not being the case cannot buy another apple, my confidence in them is shot. There are way too many problems with them, and more keep appearing.

Windows may suck really bad, but a PC computer will last 5-7 years as opposed to 1.5 years on Mac

I had my logic board replaced a couple of weeks ago (at cost, I might add) due to my ATI X1600 cutting out all the time. Guess what's happened today?

Oh yes, I'm getting the weird graphics anomalies that everyone else with the older MBP (I have a 2nd gen 17" - 2007 series) is experiencing.

Tried to screenshot them with no luck so far, but my anomalies look exactly like everyone else's.

My GPU isn't even running that hot at the moment - about 45C. This is getting ridiculous

    Hey all,

So like those above have been saying, there is a flat rate of $310 where you can hopefully get this fixed, or at least prolong the life of your computer for another few years. They told me at the apple store that if I can replicate the problem, they send it to some outsourced company where they'll replace the logic board with a new one, still apple, and new not refurbished.

That being said, I'm not sure how to replicate this. I've been using smcfancontrol, so I guess I'll turn that off at the store. Otherwise, youtube, hulu, run a tv show on itunes? SMC has been helping somewhat, and I've never been able to make my computer freeze, it only does it when I don't want it to! Anyone have any suggestions for duplicating this problem in store?

    Hey all,

Great news! My computer's going in tomorrow for the $310 flat rate repair program. I live in the Rockland/Westchester area of New York, and a guy at the Apple store in the Palisades knew about the ATI video card problem and told us about the $310 program for most repairs if you're out of warranty. Since that store is closing for renovations and couldn't send it out, I went to the Westchester store - no one bother going there, they're totally clueless. So I went back to the Palisades, they set up a work authorization form for me, and told me to go to any Apple store and they'll send it out.

I don't know why a lot of Apple people seem not to know about this program, but it's called DEPOT REPAIR, and is $310 for Macbook Pro. Good luck to everyone else in getting this fixed, and I'll keep you updated as to my computer's condition once it comes back!

I am so glad you were able to get the flat rate fix like I did. I have felt so badly to read all these posts with the same issue I had and not get the flat rate repair that I got.

Since my repair, my MBP has been perfectly fine, but I know it's a matter of time when it will break again. :o( I am very cautious about using PhotoShop Elements for too long and the one and only game I ever play, Sims 3. It's frustrating to me that I have to be so overly careful with a machine that is supposed to handle those type of programs.

I concur with the others that have said that giving us 50% off a new machine would be wonderful...
