This is nothing new... the depot repair option was something used for the defective iBook G3s that had display failure as well. The thing is, I can not believe paying $310 for a product that failed within one-two years to repair is a great option... especially when it's not a low number of failures. Just because I did not get AppleCare and did not deal with this within the first year, like a great many others, does not mean Apple should be so silent in better solutions like issuing a Repair Extension Program for this DEFECTIVE ATI GRAPHICS CARD!

It seems that as a global company they have no global policy.

I just came off the phone on a charade through Apple Germany's hotlines. Off course the hotline service agent had no idea about the ptoblem whatsoever, I asked to be forwarded to his supervisor, who again was not any the wiser. I called tech, and they also had no idea or weren't in the position to acknowledge anything, went to my local Apple dealer / point and they were tech nerds knowing exactly what the problem is and that apple does not doe anything about it: No kidding?!

So, isn't the US a country where you can get sued for sellng hot coffee? Is there no way we can file a class act and demand our rights? I mean we asked and begged apple to acknowledge the problem to no avail ... what else power do we have?

I guess maybe globally they're don't have depot repair. I just got my computer back today and it's working great so far - fingers crossed! They replaced the logic board, the fans, and fixed a problem I had with the hinges holding the computer together in the front. No problems here - you just need to find someone who knows about this program - when I called apple when the problem first started, they had no idea what I was talking about.

Look, it has become apparent that we need to find an alternative web forum to discuss this issue. First everyone subscribe to this forum and post your emails in your profiles. Next, we need to find a forum where we can discuss our options freely. Any suggestions? If anyone is even able to read this before its erased.

    Hi Bennettvonbennett, all,

Yes, my posts too have mysteriously 'disappeared'... also had a post 'edited' by 'host' to remove certain references... I agree, we need a non-bias, un-censored forum... I'll certainly get onto your mailing list... If anyone has subscribed to thier posts and still has all the old emails - don't delete them, they may be useful!!! Also, check out user "DHD_03" and the web link in the profile...

    Cheers, John

    Hi you,

I wrote another Complain to Apple, including the DEPOT REPAIR PROGRAM, as other experienced, apple said to me there is no DEPOT REPAIR PROGRAM. He argued it's unfair against Apple Care Customers from us, to want any help now, and i am foolish enough to buy the machine without a extra warranty protection.

This was the second 30 minute big sorry, but no refunds call from apple.

My sight about that is slightly different. If you produce crap, it's not the question if anybody else makes anything. The crap should be solved by you.

Understand apple? Don't push other customers into the line between you and us, you made the error, you're treating us like S*.

Will sell my machine next time, i am frustrated, in the time i wasted running against apple i could have earned enough money for a new machine. This is the next point i am very angry about.

But i will not stop looking at the problem and supporting you, in the case you need my voice.

    Hello All,

I also have been struggling with this problem. SMCFancontrol has helped alleviate the problem a little, but not enough to run graphics intensive applications. Additionally I have been using a chill mat, and it provides some improvement, but frankly, not as much as SMCFancontrol, just running the fans at 5000rpm when using iphoto, photoshop, etc.

It is also very hard to run an external monitor, can only do it if not running applications using graphics.

Waiting for some type of resolution, or clear-cut path for repair.

    Disappointed long time Mac User.

Looks like we just had bad luck. If we all had nvidia GPUs we would get the royal treatment.

Is anyone else getting a report of failed Video RAM from TechTools? I've been experiencing video artifacts for a while now, but until recently had little to no stability issues. I've since run into a couple of situations that are as described earlier--computer seems to be frozen at the console but I can still SSH in from another machine. I downloaded and ran TechTools Deluxe, and all tests pass except the Video RAM test.

I'm currently in the process of getting my Applecare sorted out (the machine is covered, but I hadn't registered the transfer of ownership when my last employer let me keep it, so I can't send it in until they let Apple know to transfer the AppleCare), hoping that this will be a quick turnaround. I'm not looking forward to reinstalling the original (80GB) HDD, although at least I'll have the opportunity to do a clean install on it and rule out software issues.

Here I was thinking I had a rare exception, having a hardware failure on an Apple product! These computers do come at a premium price, and one does expect them to last. I did buy my Macbook Pro used (about 1 year old, but out of Apple Care) so don't have the extended Apple Care warranty. Recently the screen started acting up -- streaks, blackouts, strange colors, freezing. So I started to search online. To my amazement I found this forum, and many like it. The ATI Radeon X1600 seems to be a weak limb in the Apple tree. What are they going to do about it? I could accept a failure if it seemed that it was something that happened to a few people. But there seems to be a LOT of problems. I keep hoping that Apple will admit that there is high rate of failures, and do something about it.
Thanks for all the screen shots and such, which very accurately picture the problems I am having.
