Your situation is almost exactly the same as my story and what the vast majority are experiencing on this thread. It'd be interesting to know how many others besides those on this thread are going through the same thing. It'd be interesting to know for those that chose to have it repaired, how many are working like they should or if this does not fix the problem for the long term...

I want to add myself as someone who is suffering from this. Unfortunately I have the X1600 in a MacBook Pro and an iMac. Horribly, I have display problems on BOTH systems. C'mon Apple, address this!

Add me to the list of people having the same problem. Every time I watch a video in itunes, online, or in quicktime I get the same graphics artifacts.

No wonder Apple are ignoring this issue, as it appears more and more of these machines with ATI 1600 cards will go ping at some point usually within 3 years of its life, costing them heaps.

But then i have to ask why they can give away a free iPod to students who buy a Mac????

    Poor.

    hi , all unlucky's friends..
it seem that we are more and more, without any answer from Apple
to solve for a while the problem, not to cure it, as our GPU is slowly dying and become more and more temperature sensible, I clean the fans and, as they were noisy since more than a year, especially the right one (under the power button), I dissassemble them and put some oil on the rotor axe.
miracle ! not a bit of noise, so I run them manually with smc, but often to the max when using heavy graphical softs.
No more glitches, no more hard reboot, but fans which are at 4500 to 5000/5500 (5500 is really the limit, as smc often make them run 250 rpm more. )
So , I use a real manual set up : according to the temperature, I turn them on before starting an application . when idle, as now, only safari, my new default is 2000, and become 2500 these days which are hot here.
Sure it's not a solution, sure it's not why we have spent so many bucks in an Apple expensive product.
but it save for now my computer and my numeric life, until .... ???

Apple should think about WHY my PC friends are laughting at me when I explain that kind of problems and solutions ...
You can always talk about switching, the bad is done... so, for about 200 consumers unhappy and full with anger about that problem, HOW MANY SWITCHERS LOST ????

    That's the question

    unfortunately, TRUE

But they have also 95 % of the high-price computer, so, if they want to stay there, they should think about having some actions for peoples who have hardware issue, even after the legal warranty .
I'm not sure that a public sue for a graphical card or others issues will made a good advertising for Apple. So, we are here about 200 ....

    imagine a class action .... ? ! ?

just to say, I wanted to here a flash movie while checking that forum, and I didn't pay attention enought to the temperature.
Oh, Steve, god of the gods, it run above 69 ° for a poor flv video...
    so, hard reset ...

btw, thing wich is ok for me sometime:
when you try to reboot, and it don't work, wait 2 seconds, press again only the power button for a second, and it will reboot without hard rebooting (power off/on)

    Hi again,

Just reading through recent posts, a few new names here now... Not sure if everyone is reading through the enitire thread so... don't forget to pass on this link: http://www.sfmslaw.com/pages/cases.php?id=779 It's not a guaranteed 'fix' for our problem(s), dying MBPs... but it will, I assume, be a thorough investigation into the issue(s) and may result in some kind of action that may give us unhappy Apple customers some sense of resolution?

    Cheers, John

I don't know if all that works. I don't think it is an easy fix at any rate, long and tedious.
Although my awesome paper weight is slowly becoming that, I basically can do this on my computer, and maybe check some e-mail. Other than that, this hunk of junk, is useless.
I wonder if I should get one of those net-books really cheap, really small, and surprisingly fast.
Can you run Mac OS on a linux machine?

I still wouldn't mind making my own computer with E-Fix, you guys should look it up. For those that have not heard.

Anyways, all the best of luck for u guys struggling with this, I have basically given up, on apple doing anything to help. I hope something turns up.

thanks john0. everyone in this thread should probably sign this claim. wish apple would do the right thing on its own but it seems a bit of pressure is needed.

I posted here at the top of the page about the issue I've been having. It was just 'resolved'. Here's what I did and what happened...

I've been having the same issue with my graphics card on the original Dual Core MBP 15" ATI x1600 machine. I took it to the apple store and the genius was about to test the graphics card with an nvidia tester. I pointed out to him that it was an ATI card. Instead of taking out an ATI tester he became claimant on software issues once I mentioned that I took at screenshot of hte problem if he couldn't replicate it right away in teh store (he only tried to replicate it for 10 minutes even though I told him the computer had to get hotter). He did a simple hardware test system wide and sent me away.

I called up apple technical support (I still have applecare, though this point didn't come up directly, I assume they had looked it up). The tech had me reset my pram and then told me that I would have to send my computer in for repair. It's now a week later. They replaced the logic board for "hang/freeze up", the thermal module "Thermal module defective", both fans "noise/hum/vibration", and the thermal sensor cable "cables-defective".

I just got it back a week from the day I shipped it to them and so far no issues. I can see that I am one of the few that has been lucky enough to experience this outcome. Unfortunately the logic board is probably refurbished and it is still the x1600 but it's better than nothing. Clearly apple found many problems associated with my machine, though, and should at the least do the same for you.

    thanks a lot John,
that was a useful reminder, because I had read the whole post, but didn't check your links before.
I just have put all my informations on it.
I hope this will give us at least the pleasure to have not been f...ed up when trying to buy Apple products when they had the most difficult transition: going from PPC to Intel
    my best regards
