Jan 15, 2009 11:57 AM in response to rami bisharaby Lt General Kasty,I have been having horizontal lines appear and occasional freezes when using graphic intensive programs such as DVD Player. I looked into a couple of threads such as this one and it looked like anyone with the ATI x1600 graphics card were suffering the same issue.
I took it into the Apple Store and they ended up shipping off to a repair depot for fixing. The Apple Genius said it would take 5-7 days for it to come back; they would overnight it to me at my home address. I took it in Monday afternoon and got it back today.
So far, everything's been fine graphically and such. They note parts replaced in the product repair summary, which included item #630-7753 Logic Board, listed with the symptom "Distorted Video"
Thankfully, my AppleCare doesn't expire until this August and I was fully covered at no charge.
If you have AppleCare, get to your nearest Apple Store for repair. It's free. If you don't have AppleCare, I don't know how much a repair will cost. -
Jan 19, 2009 1:53 AM in response to Lt General Kastyby Thomas Berglund,Thanks for chiming in!
Looking forward to get my MacBook Pro fixed too. -
Jan 26, 2009 3:18 AM in response to Lt General Kastyby ren*,Same issues as everyone. I took mine in to the Apple Store and without even getting any tests done, they told me since I don't have Apple Care it'd be wiser to just +get a new computer altogether+ since the logic board is one of the two most expensive things in the entire machine. Rather than give up, I'm going to get my logic board replaced through a cheaper alternative (there are very many alternatives than Apple themselves, especially if you're in a metropolitan area!).
Hope to come back with good news! -
Jan 26, 2009 4:24 AM in response to ren*by macuser128,Hi you,
Same here, it's not economical to buy a new Board. I found some in ebay, the price was between 500 and 660 $ from the US, shipment not included. Also i found some 'damaged' MBP's where u may get a replacement board from. but:
Who guarantees me that the board doesn't has the same issue
Next: I wrote to apple, no response. Now i am wondering that thru:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
People with a NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT and a similar issue got a replacement for free AND they got their money backwards if they already paid for it, before releasing this apple article:
quote:
*Apple is issuing refunds to customers who may have paid for repairs related to this issue. Please contact Apple for details on the refund process.*
Why we didn't get the service? i don't understand that! i think we should do something to get handled as fair as other customers.
note: APPLE SERVICE READ THIS!!! -
Jan 26, 2009 4:42 AM in response to ren*by macuser128,note2: Do a feedback about that to apple - click:
http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbookpro.html
there you can send a feedback report to apple. Please do this, write down your problems and paste a link of this thread into it. If there are enough bad feedbacks pointing to our problem, they maybe will start reading this thread. -
Jan 26, 2009 5:06 AM in response to macuser128by spagbol23,Ive submitted my feedback, and im off to the genius bar tomorrow, and ill raise this issue whilst im there.
Lets kick up a fuss about this unfairness. You never know we may get it replaced at no cost if enough of us complain.

Jan 28, 2009 8:59 PM in response to EvANighTby spagbol23,Yea i went to the Genius bar at arndale center manchester.
As the issue seems random, id taken a few screen shots to illustrate the problem. I also mentioned that some keys on the keyboard were working intermittently specifically the P, 0, - and F10, and F11 keys and that i have no warranty, but i want to find out what the problem is. The 'genius' seemed fairly uninterested in the graphics issue saying that the keyboard replacement was fairly cheap. Yea yea, i say but what about the graphics card issue, cant you do a check on it? He asks me if the machine is up to date.....I say yea man.
So he pulls out some external drive thing.....i dunno something to check the graphics card i think, black box thing into USB.
He rebooted the machine trying to clear the PRAM
I point out to the guy that he cant clear the PRAM without an external keyboard, cos the P, 0, ..etc , but in this instance specifically the P key isnt working on my keyboard so you cant reset PRAM, trust me i know i use my MBP alot.
Oh yea he says, rather sleepily. man who is this 'Genius' im thinking, has he just got up out of bed??, Its 10:40. my appointment was at 11:00, but as i turned up early the concierge had managed to fit me in early, nice chap. I was starting to think i should have refused and stuck to my 11:00 appointment. .
Ok so the dude gets a keyboard, reboots PRAM, and then reboots hitting the D key, nothing is happening, He reboots PRAM again, i turn around to watch the pensioners sat in a row at another desk behind me with their inferior MacBooks, white ones. The Genius is rebooting randomly now, hitting the D key, saying that my D key doesnt work.
Im like what? No the D key is fine, the D key always works, its the P key that dont work.......trust me i know how to make a snag list. I dont think he knows what i mean by snag list, i think the guy is from Italy or Poland maybe somewhere like that, judging by his bad command of the english language.
Hmmmpppphhhhh....ok well so erm he turns to his "genius' mate, who actually sounds like he knows what he's talking about and his mate says you cant test that graphics card cos its combined with the logic board........so what the **** has the 'genius' whos dealing with me doing???
Who is the genius here?
OK so i would have to replace my whole logic board, said it was expensive, i say you dont say expensive, how expensive?? He say bout 500, its like about the most expensive part of the computer he say, rolling his eyes up and over as if to imitate he was looking at the massive pile of cash it would cost me.
I say Ok well as its the most expensive part of the computer why has it not been tested better, and pointed to the thread showing the number of people with radeon x1600 MBP's reporting display issues which he seemed to have no opinion on, or he was just half asleep still. I also asked about the NVideo replacement thing. He say....ahhh whole screen knackered no see nothing.
I asked at this point if apple consider that the graphics issue i and other radeon x1600 users were experiencing on a professional level machine was more or less acceptable than the Nvidia issue to a professional level machine and a professional user?
He shrugged his shoulders.
So i say how much to fix the keyboard? not much is the answer, ok ill just use my powers of telepathy and see the actual price by pure thought. Hmm that doesnt work.
ok....
Can you get it fixed for me?
Can it be ready by Friday?
Can you deliever it back to me?
Yes.
Cant be guaranteed within 5 days, alot of people off sick.
No. -
Jan 29, 2009 5:25 AM in response to spagbol23by macuser128,Hum,
Apple removed my last post because of violating the forum rules.
Ok they started reading it for now! Thanks apple! -
Jan 29, 2009 9:50 AM in response to macuser128by spagbol23,At least i managed to read your reply before it was deleted. So good to hear that you will try to make this a more visable problem for apple. Hopefully they would sit up and listen and fix the issue. It may also persaude me to spend more money with apple on a bigger better machine aswell if they actually sat up and took note, as im sure others would. But right now im being cautious, probably like the rest of you.
So come one apple now your reading this thread how about a comment to try and appease us all and tell us of a reasonable solution to this hardware/design configuration issue. -

Jan 31, 2009 10:49 AM in response to EvANighTby Egg1234,My apologies for using the wrong terminology
instead of "extended warranty" I should have used "Apple Care Protection Plan"
Sorry for the confusion and raising false hopes,
Eckhard.
