It is possible that during your conversion you used a stereo setting but only copied the left channel to your target file. Or, there is the possibility that the file is really in stereo, but your balance was somehow adjusted all the way to the left channel. If you have QT Pro, open the "Properties" window, select the audio track in the upper section of the window, and then select the audio settings tab in the lower section of the window. If the balance is set all the way to the left, then simply center the balance and save the file with the corrected balance setting. If the audio track indicates the presence of stereo content and the balance is already centered, then there is no audio recorded on the right channel and you have to go back and re-convert your original file paying particular attention to possible audio setting in the conversion application.

ok how?

If you have QT Pro, open the "Properties" window, select the audio track in the upper section of the window, and then select the audio settings tab in the lower section of the window. Go to the Channel Assignment sub-window on the right of the lower section of the main window, click and hold on line that says "2 Right." When "pop-up" opens, select left and release mouse button. Now save the file as a "self-contained" movie, add it to iTunes library and re-sync iPod.

I have the same problem but the video is a dubbed VHS tape that I own and the audio is coming through the right side only. I followed the above instructions and they worked well but the problem is, of course, QT Pro. It is way to slow. I started converting a movie yesterday and today it is still converting. I'm dubbing my VHS tapes to DVD's & converting some for the iPod.

After saving the movie as a "self-contained" movie it gives me a .MOV file. Currently my iPod is not working so I can't test to see if this file will work on the iPod as is, need to know will the .mov actually work on the iPod or do I have to convert it. I used the 'export to ipod' option in QT Pro after fixing the audio & it's just to slow.

While the file extension has indeed been changed, if you check the "Info" or "Properties" window, you will see the audio and video formats remain unchanged. If the extension change bothers you or if you prefer an extension that correctly identifies the format content, then you can correct it manually. Apple applications tend to rely on the file's content in this case, not the extension. Third party applications, on the other hand may "filter" or "trap" on a file's extension which is why you will get the warning message when making changes to an extension.

Thank you very much. I was hoping that was the case.

EDIT: I just checked the movies that were changed and the only one that plays out of both earphones is the one I converted with QT Pro. The ones that were changed to a .MOV file still only play through the right side of the earphones, so they do need to be converted for the sound to play out of both earphones.

QT Pro is required to change attributes/settings as described. I have no problem doing so without re-converting the entire file -- even to include settings like looping, cache, high quality, etc. which are ignored by the iPod but which are used by other players and/or multimedia plug-ins. If they did not work in this case, I suspect something was done incorrectly in the work flow.

Maybe the problem is that audio was only recorded on one channel when the movie was dubbed. I have the VCR connected to the VCR/DVD recorder combo deck with the cable that came with the VCR. It is one video & one audio on each end of the cable so I was only able to plug in the right channel only. The solution you gave solved the audio problem but it has to be converted again for the sound to play from both left & right sides of the headphones.

I dubbed 3 more movies but using the AV cable from my DVD player which has 1 video plus both audio plugs. I just plugged the one red to the audio out of the VCR and both red & white to the audio in on the combo deck. I'm encoding the movies now and will see if this will work to bring the sound to both left and right sides of my headphones. If this doesn't work then I'll have to get an audio adapter.
