wmv and pps files

Love my new mac. But I still get a lot of pps and wmv files attached to e-mails. Are there some recommended downloads for MAC that would enable me to open these without too much hassle? I heard about FLIP4MAC for wmv and then THNKFREE widgets for pps files. Any input would be greatly appreciated before I make a move to download either of these.

I-MAC 24", Mac OS X (10.5.4)

Lutra,

There is an old version of Windows Media player for the mac:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/0/f/3/0f347443-f1ff-4830-9b20-65da2c6bf11 1/WindowsMediaInstaller.bin which will open some files but the best if Flip4Mac as mentioned by Kappy. One I use a lot for all sorts of video files is VLC.

For the other files, pps is a powerpoint document. If you have Microsoft Office you can open them by changing the pps to ppt. Keynote will also open them. There used to be a viewer for powerpoint but I think it stopped back at Office 98 on the mac side ( http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=e25cb1e5-209c-4a58-b283 -23e84b616477&displaylang=en) . Alternatively NeoOffice will work or OpenOffice is another variant.

Flip4Mac WMV is buggy software. Period! Reporting the bugs may get them fixed but I doubt that they'll actually do anything about it. I have even seen weird Java related errors on sites that require Windows Media Player 9.0 where the Mac release doesn't work properly.

The problem might be in the Open Source JavaEmbeddingPlugin that allows Java based Windows Media Player 9.0 websites to function in browsers other than Apple's Safari too. I'm going to try upgrading my Java on both of my Macs to see if that fixes it. Apple's current Java for Leopard/10.5.4 is very outdated compared to the latest Sun J2RE for Windows.

Apple will probably officially release an updated Apple version of Sun's J2RE for Mac OS X very shortly too (within a matter of months).

Nah...not true for me and the circle of Mac users I know. It's proven to be quite good, actually. I think the fact that it's surpassed 15 million downloads might be an indication that it does work, But, to each his own. Some will vote Bidden, some Palin

All that being said, I occasionally encounter some content that has been encoded with a non-standard codec, and then wrapped inside a WMV. There is a lot of variety in the way content providers offer up their video. IMO, it's quite an accomplishment that F4M handles as much as it does with all that stuff floating about on the net.

Ahh...but this is all subject for a different thread...the original question was about PPS files....
