Norton Internet Security 2008 - Crash & auto restart every time

MacPro 2008 8 Core with Boot Camp (no virtualization SW). Machine is 1 month old, Boot Camp/ XP_SP2 installtion only 3 weeks old. Half a dozen programs, all performing perfectly,

Everything ran fine with Windows until I installed Norton Internet Security 2008. Every time after I installed NIS08 the machine suddenly crashes about 10 minutes after booting and automatically restarts. This happens very single time. Without fail.

I tried to solve the problem with Symantec tech support. Predicatbly, there were multiple crashes and restarts during a long session while under remote control by Symantec techies - all the way up through 3 levels of tech support. Seven crashes today alone. They repeatedly deleted the temp files to no avail. They ran the Norton updated without a problem.

I am certain that the crashes are triggered by some automated action - presumably by Norton performing a scan in the background. Symantec boys passing the buck to Microsoft..... Nothing I can do but wipe, reinstall Windows, reinstall Norton (and nothing else) and see if the problem reoccurs.

Trey:

There are several posts in the forum suggesting the same or related issues as you have in yours. Norton Anti-Virus 2008 has been an issue with Boot Camp partitions on some Macs. Not entirely sure what causes this... whether it is Norton or one of the hardware drivers that Apple provides but the issues appear to have almost always resolved when removing Norton.

You know, you can install some other Anti-Virus temporarily until a new version of Norton or Boot Camp drivers come out and see if that solves it.

I had this same problem on two macs with vista 32: mbook pro and imac. On both machines I opted out of running virtual and instead run from boot camp.

Norton does not work at all on the mbook pro under boot camp. Since I seldom use win on the mbook connected to the internet I just take my chances.

On the imac I don't have that option, I'm on win 40% of my time. But Norton 360 works, except for backup.

I don't think Norton tech knows anything about how their product works on Macs. They are useless with the subject. Useless in general...I've never had a successful tech call with Symantec.

I run 64-bit Vista, tried using NIS 2007 and again 2008, both were iffy and like most others, eventually had some problems, mostly minor, but Ghost 12 wouldn't update.

But I don't think NIS2008 caused any problem but that was last fall. I switched to Kaspersky Suite and last time decided Vista Defender was fine and installed AVG (free) to cover security.

In some cases, the only recourse is reinstall or restore from backup. And if you used, say, WinClone or something and took the precautions of making a clone prior, always good practice, on any OS, before updates or installing new software.

I don't know how far you've delved into the whole Windows Recovery environment but then, based on reading Windows newsgroups and such, Norton can be difficult and Norton's own removal tools aren't always successful.

Does Windows perform registry backup, shadow, or do you have a restore point? I've had to use that in Vista a couple times.

Safe Boot. Disable the 'reboot on crash.' and disable any Symantec services from running - if possible to get that far.
