Back button on mouse????

Sorry for the Noob question but doesn't the mac have some sort of Back or Forward button on the mouse when using Safari or Firefox?

I have a PC with a Logitech MX518 mouse and it has these forward and back buttons on the side that allow me to go backwards or forwards through my page history without having to go to the top of the browser window and click.

Can anyone tell me how to go back and forth through the web pages with the mouse?

Come on now, I just paid good money for my iMac and it doesn't even have a back button for web use. Sure, it looks pretty but is it functional??? After all, didn't Apple just start putting a right-click button on their mice.

Someone must have a option that's faster than taking my hand off the mouse. When I'm on the web, I'm flying through information and honestly it would be a huge disappointment to slow this process down by not having that feature.

If you want to mess with it, you could assign your own keyboard shortcut to a mouse button via System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard Shortcuts. You would need to scroll to the bottom of that window, click on the "+" sign to add an item, and select Safari from the Application popdown menu. Enter a name for the menu command you're entering (Back Button or something like that), then enter the keyboard shortcut for that, which is Command-[ (without the "-" character.

Rinse and repeat for the Forward button and it's shortcut, Command-]; again, without the "-" character.

Since I don't have a Mighty Mouse to test with and I thought you were using the Logitech mouse you referred to in your original post, I don't think this will work for you without the aid of some additional software, namely SteerMouse.

This $20 piece of software enables additional options to configure the Mighty Mouse, which Apple does not include in their software for it. There is a 30 day free trial, so you might as well give it a shot and see if you like it. And you can remove those shortcuts you created earlier in the Keyboard & Mouse section of System Preferences by selecting them and clicking on the "-" symbol for each.

Oh come on people. Obviously no one here has ever used a PC with this feature. It's absolutely amazingly simple, fast, and efficient way to navigate in a browser. Don't knock it until you've tried it folks. It sure does beat having to use both hands to operate a simple feature that I've been doing with my PC for 10 years now.

Does anyone here know if they sell other mice that have this feature or a way to manipulate the OS to allow this?

Listen, this is more becoming a tangent on the Apple and PC religions and all I want to do is assign a function to a mouse button. I'm not trying to solve word hunger or develop an exit strategy for Iraq, I just want to assign a function to a mouse button. I'm sorry, I just find it disappointing that this useful feature is not included in the OS.

Hi, I have to agree with theuser869 here, even though his tone is abrasive. It /is/ a big deal taking your hand off the mouse and going to the keyboard. And what's up with the religion thing? Apple has problems. Windows has problems. And, oh yes, my new mac did crash a couple days after I turned it on, which was the main reason I switched from Windows. Computers are computers, what's with the religious brainwashing thing?

Anyway, this is a simple and desirable feature, and should be a default.

I have been using Macs since 2002 and the side back/forward buttons on the Microsoft wireless mice always worked on Safari & Firefox until I installed some updates including Security Update 2008-007 on my PM running Leopard. I could find no way to fix the problem, so thanks to Time Machine I rolled everything back to before the upgrade and regained the back/forward functionality.
Sadly the so called updates often remove more useful features than they add or fix, & I don't know how to remove them once they're installed, other than time machine. "If it isn't broken, don't fix it" and you'll avoid the tears.
