I'm getting odd distortion on sound from web sources only (iTunes is fine, as is Quicktime). Safari and Firefox both sound "tinny" and distorted - all websites, including myspace, youtube, etc. have this sound.
I seem to remember a simple fix for this over a year or so ago. Can't find it through the search.
Please help if you remember this fix.
I tried trashing the "plist" prefs but that didn't work.
I have been noticing a similar issue but I think I have at least found a connection. I downloaded a Java App (a .jar file) called eartoner 1.2. This java app is for playing audio for ear training. There is heavy digital distortion in the Right channel only, even when plugging in to a mixer and external studio reference monitors. If I split the audio and play only the Left channel it sounds normal.
This application is doing exactly the same thing that the Java applet Turbo21 on www.pogo.com is doing. I have been playing that game for ages and suddenly I noticed that the audio in the right channel is distorted. I am fairly certain that it was the Java for Mac 10.5 Update 1 that caused the problem, but even after installing Java for Mac 10.5 Update 2 the problem persists. I play games at pogo.com quite often and would really like to use eartoner to do some pitch training.
Is there a way to throw out all my Java versions and install clean from a master installer? I'd be willing to try that if I could figure out how to do it.
Ok, I downloaded and re-installed both of the Java updates and the problem is still the same. I even went to the Java Preferences and swapped the older version to be the default and the problem is still the same. The Java App Eartoner 1.2 is still sounding terrible in the right speaker.
I also checked back at Pogo.com and Turbo21 (and any other Java game) sounds bad. Help!
I have this same problem on a Quad Proc 2.5GHz G5. However, this works fine for me on a MacPro. Both have 10.5.5. Specific to Intel Macs?
I have reproed with lala.com and lastfm.com. I would love to find a solution to this problem as it drives me nuts! If anyone has any info that might help, please let me know.
Software Update just loaded OS 10.5.6, which seems to have fixed the audio problem my older iMac was having. The left audio channel seemed to be cancelling out some of the sound; switching to right channel only got me clear mono. I now have stereo again! I had missed it...
Everything has worked fine on mine until recently. About 3 days ago my sound while on pogo.com is also distorted in the right speaker. I updated my OS X software to 10.5.6 but the problem is still there. My sound is fine for all other applications, it is just a problem on pogo.com. It is a VERY annoying buzzing sound that pulsates on top of the other sounds. Has anyone found a fix for this? I have a 3.06 Ghz iMac with the Intel Core 2 Duo processor. Again ... it worked fine up until a couple of days ago.
For those of you having this problem, I was able to correct this by starting and quitting Garage Band. Garage Band opened fine, but then when attempting to close it, it returned out of memory errors and would not close. I performed a force quit on it and after that, the pogo sound was fine. Not sure what happened or what caused this ... but it appears to be working now.
I found a solution that worked for me.
I just upgrade to 10.5.6 and the sound came out distorted in the right speaker when I played any game on Pogo but it sounded fine w/iTunes and Youtube. I called tech support and they had me try a few things and eventually I was told to reinstall Leopard. This didn't make a difference. What worked for me was going into my Java settings (in Utilities) and reordering the list by putting Java SE 6 at the top of both choices. It's nice being able to hear it clean again. hope this helps others.
