Globally Turn Off Icon Preview?

Is there a way to completely turn off icon preview in the Finder--for every file on my hard drive?

I only use tiny icons where an icon preview is worthless. I would rather see an icon that indicates the type of file. I have thousands of folders, many nested several layers deep. I obviously don't want to attempt to turn off icon preview manually for each folder.

Thanks.

Frank,

Thanks for thinking about this. Unfortunately i am still stuck with the same situation: in finder windows i can disable any preview, when opening from an application, however, the icons still change into previews, which annoys me.
The cmd+j, 'use as default' doesn't alter that behaviour one bit. must be some other setting (if it can be changed at all).

I have been of the impression that the view options are set for each folder. So the "use as default" at the bottom of the view option dialog box would just be for any new folders. I have changed icon preview box and the use as default box and it does not change other folder settings.

We would really like to be able to turn off 'icon preview' in all folders.

Tried your suggestion, and it works when opening folders from the finder. I changed this to default for all viewing modes.

However, if I try opening a file from inside an application (eg CMD-O when in Excel), I still see all generic icons change in preview icons.
So, is there a way to switch that off as well???

I've just installed both OS X 10.5.6 and the iWork 09 Trial and now the icons in spotlight (menubar and finder spotlight) have the useless preview instead of the identifiable document icon for each of the iWork apps.

I've tried the global settings as described above but it has no effect so my (small) icons are invariably indistinguishable white squares. Anyone know how to turn this off so I can have the iWork icons that appear in normal finder windows?

Baltwo,

Thanks for trying to help me out.
To give you some more detail:
If, for example, in Excel 2004 I do CMD-O, then a window pops up to open a file. Top left of that window I can select the view mode for that window (3 possibilities). Now, if it is ´list´or ´columns´ view I indeed only see generic icons. However, if I select ´icons´ view (leftmost possibility of the 3), I see all icons change into previews. This despite the fact that in finder I disabled icon preview for all view modes (including ´icon´ view).

Problem is the same in any application when opening files in ´icon´ view mode. A bit annoying.

Thanks,
HansC
