Ipod 5th Gen. for young teen

My daughter is 13 and, of course, enthralled with the new video Ipod. I'd like to get it for her for Christmas but I'm wondering if there is some advice experienced users can give us.

We've never owned an Ipod before and I'm getting a little intimidated by all the encoding/converting talk. Can we manage this? ;-D

Welcome to discussions. If the main use is music, then simply using iTunes will be enough. The encoding/converting is for videos transfers, especially as the iPod is still new. I would imagine nearer Christmas, the market will have more applications available to do this easier. There is also Quicktime Pro which can do it, but from the various post, is very slow. It is still early days for the first adoptors, but give it a month or so....

We'll probably just go with iTunes for convenience! And I don't think she really wants to do anything except download music and music videos. I would like to download TV shows though - is that more complicated?

Also, I've read some things here on the board about it scratching easily. How do we avoid that? And would the silver scratch less than the black?

Thanks for helping! 🙂

Yes, the black iPod will scrath/smudge very easily. Get the white one (the scraches are not nearly as noticeable). And, when you order the ipod - order a full body cover from www.theinvisibleshield.com they are great but are slighly expensive. Using iTunes for music and download video from iTunes is wonderfully simple, however, if you want to put your own shows on it it is more difficult. However, by Christmas there should definatley better software for ripping/encoding DVDs for the ipod (whether it is going to be free or not i do not know). And any ways, I am 14 and I have the new iPod (Payed for it with my own $).
Happy iPodding.

If your download TV shows from iTunes Store its simple. It only gets complicated when you want to take existing movies and impot them. I have been using PSPware and it has worked rather well and is simple to use. I also use the screen protectors I got for my PSP and they work great. You just have to cut it to fit. Mine actually arrived new in the box with a small screatch.

Thanks for the info, y'all ~

I looked at the Invisible Shield and it looks like a "must-have" especially considering how badly her black cell phone is scratched. She used her case for it all the time and never threw it in a purse or left it lying around without the case, and it's still hideous looking. The black definitely shows more scratches.

I'd like to order the iPod NOW so I can play around with it and even have some stuff downloaded on it by Christmas so she wouldn't have as much to figure out. But it seems like some of them have some "bugs" - should I wait?

LaHolly,
I got my video iPod last night and had all my music and about 10 music videos on it and playing before I went to bed. I think anything you buy off of iTunes will be a snap to get on the iPod. As far as "bugs" go, I think that was more of a problem with iTunes than the iPod. I think the first version of iTunes 6 had some bugs, but now that version has been replaced by 6.01 and I encountered no problems upgrading last night.

LaHolly, Welcome to this discussion Boards.
the new video ipod is great, I have one and I truly Love it.not that I needed it, I have all of them since the Original. this is truly a great gift for the holidays.
I suggest not waiting for the last minute to buy it since it may become a HOT seller. as for all this talk about encoding don't worry about it. the first thing she will be downloading is MUSIC and later she'll worry about videos or movies. I 've noticed kids now a days pickup faster that us and they seem to understand this gadgets better. my son is 14 and when he got his for his birthday he allready knew what to do with it.

Good Luck
