iTunes 8.0 - Genius - unknown error 4010

iTunes 8.0 gathers data about my music library well enough and sends it to Apple too; but then 10-15 seconds into "processing" by Apple, iTunes stops and reports that "Genius results can't be updated right now. An unknown error occurred (4010)." I thought it might be overloaded servers and tried several more times in the hope of squeezing my request in between those of everyone else; but that didn't work; plus if it were a server issue I'd expect to see postings here from others with the same problems, and I'm not.

Any thoughts about what the problem might be?

John,
You are not alone. Same problem here as well. I am wondering if 29GB of library has anything to do with it, or is it just 500K people hitting the servers as well. I have fond memories of the old days when there were less mac users... 😉

Well, perhaps it is just the servers choking a bit. My library is what I consider to be a kind of upper-middle size of 28GB - more than the 11 albums my wife has on her machine but well fewer than the 22,000 songs I hear about from some people!

I can wait a bit too. I mean, with 28GB of music I ought to be able to find something I like without the help of an algorithmic "genius" --

Similar problem here. iTunes gets about 1/3 of the way through "Delivering your Genius results" when it fails. In addition to the message "Genius results can't be updated right now" it says "network connection timed out." My network connection is just fine, but I also have a (very very) large library (57000 songs). Its almost as if there's a timeout that isn't allowing the results to download fully before itunes thinks something is wrong.

Guys, I have tried to perform a little troubleshooting on my end: I was running a Leopard-capable hacked version of Volume Logic on the laptop. Concerned this might contribute to the problem. I removed the plugin, rebooted, and reattempted and no luck; still a no go.

Also as the iTunes library is on an external drive on my laptop, I attempted to upgraded to iTunes 8 on the desktop. This computer has the library on an internal drive. I have the same error: "Waiting for apple to process the information" it times out or just gives up and gives the 4010 error after ~15 secs.

FWIW,
Trey

Trey,

How you spend your time is your own business but I wouldn't bang my head against this one too much. I suspect we're just seeing an overloaded server coupled with a not very graceful recovery algorithm. (someone mentioned before this should have been interruptible if the file transfer sizes are large). I'd wait and try again tomorrow -- or later today if you're impatient)

Can any one confirm what error 4010 is?

I'm having a similar problem - the Genius "wizard" is getting 1/3 through returning my results from apple then apparently "timing out". Which is ridiculous, my internet is fine. I agree with the poster above; it seems as if the delay in returning results is seeming like a time out, when in reality it's just taking longer than some arbitrary "error delay" they've programmed into iTunes.
Help?
Oh, and I've only got 4,500 songs; or 22 GB in my iTunes folder.

Like others, the error 4010 kept occurring... this morning, instead of "Try Again", I QUIT iTunes. Then reopened and started the Genius process... it asked me to Log-In and agree to EULA. It worked like a charm. So if you are still having troubles getting it to upload after gathering music info, try quitting iTunes and start the process again.
